1940 LEYLAND TSW 14T HIPPO TANKER For Sale by Auction

John Pye Vehicle Auctionsare pleased to announce A rare ‘barn find’ collection of classic cars will be up for grabs in an online auction starting this Friday 12th April.

GK0 531 fist entered service during the early period of the Second World War and was supplied to Johnson Brothers Aylesford Ltd, whose name is still borne on the side of the tanker body. It was purchased by the vendor’s father in 1961 and subsequently went into the ownership of another party in 1979. The vehicle re-entered the collection in December 2005 when it was purchased from the West of England Transport Collection based in Exeter.

The restoration has been extensive over a considerable period to include the chassis and cab. The split screen arrangement is typical of the era and the paint schematic typical of the original period. The chassis number recorded is 304420 to enable further research and the Registration Book confirms an unladen weight of 5 tons 19cwts 67lbs
The engine bears the number C20262 which we believe the engine is the original 6 cylinder diesel unit with the manual gearbox.

Whilst the odometer reading of 22, 908 mileage cannot be fully substantiated the vendor believes it may be correct. The odometer requires refitting along with other dashboard instruments and gauges.

The restoration whilst comprehensive hasn’t been completed to date. The vendor confirms that there is some work to finish including the electrical rewire and dashboard. A basic wiring diagram forms part of the sale file to aid the new purchaser. The 24V electrical system will require batteries. Due to vehicles extensive lay up in dry storage we believe that a level of re-commissioning may be required before it is started. the vendor confirms that the engine has been running well prior to being garaged. The purchaser will need a suitable recovery method to extract the vehicle from our Marchington site.
Viewing is recommended to confirm completeness, specification and condition.

The sale comes with its original buff registration document confirming it still retains its original registration number. A current V5 registration document is also included but there is no documentation regarding its MOT or service history. This sale represents a rare opportunity for Commercial collectors to obtain a relatively original Hippo in the rare tanker format.

Commercial VAT will not apply to this sale.
