1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ (Coda Tonda)
Concours-quality restored, race prepped & complete with FIA HTP papers valid till Dec '27.
This car was acquired by the Banks' family (Alfaholics) for their private collection some 20 years ago. They then proceeded to put it through a full restoration, totalling around 7 years, which reached final completion in 2015. High priority was given to retaining as much of the original aluminium body - the roof, pillars, front scuttle, top halves of front wings, rear bodywork & bonnet all being original repaired items. Additionally, the original Zagato screen surrounds, aluminium finishers, side window frames & internal screen cappings were also carefully polished and re-used. The matching Zagato number (551) can be found marked on various trim/ finisher components of the car.
The car has covered less than 500 miles since restoration and comes complete with the additional original engine, gearbox and other components.
Official Alfa Romeo Registers record the chassis number as an original SZ produced in March 1961 and supplied to Billancourt, France. The history shows it was not long after purchased by Corsican Rally Driver Pierre Orsini who had it prepared by Virgilio Conrero before competing in various events between 1961-63. A collection of period photos from events such as Tour de France, Coupe des Alpes, Criterium Jean Behra and Criterium Alpin together with a letter from Orsini and other memorabilia accompany the car.
More recently in 2017, whilst still under Banks? ownership, the car tested 20 laps at Castle Combe and competed at the Silverstone Classic - beating the SZ lap record by 4 seconds.
The Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ (Sprint Zagato) was an aluminium-bodied 2-seater berlinetta, built by Zagato for competition use and based on the chassis and mechanicals of the Sprint Speciale. Production started in December 1959 until 1962. Hand built by Zagato - entirely in aluminium with plexiglass windows - the lightened Sprint Zagato (SZ) was expensive but fast and light. Two hundred and seventeen were built, the original design, as per this example, being with a rounded rear called the ?Coda Tonda? (round tail), while the Kamm-design of which around 30 were produced at the end of production, are referred to as the ?Coda Tronca? (truncated tail).
The SZ was a racing success on both national and international levels and helped Alfa Romeo secure victory in the 1. 3 litre class of the International Championship for GT Manufacturers in both 1962 and 1963.
This car would make a welcome Entrant at any number of current road, track and rally events throughout Europe. It?s combination of responsive handling, first class restoration and period history make it a stand out addition for any collection.
