Porsche began development of turbocharging on their race cars during the late 1960s, and in 1973 began work on a turbocharged version of the 911.
They originally needed to produce the car in order to comply with homologation regulations and had intended on marketing it as a street legal race vehicle like the 1973 Carrera 2.7 RS.
As with many cars in history the race regulations changed during this period meaning 500 Turbos had to be produced to homologate the model so the 911 Turbo was put into production in late 1974. While the original purpose of the 911 Turbo was to gain homologation for the 1976 racing season, it quickly became popular among car enthusiasts.
The next stage was to intercool the turbocharger and increase the engine capacity to 3.3 litre in 1978 producing a powerful 300 bhp and making the car much more drivable compared to the earlier model which suffered from turbo lag.
This lovely 1979 example was supplied by Maltin motors in the UK and had the popular specification of silver metallic, electric sunroof, air con and full leather interior.
She has been cherished and well maintained including a bare metal repaint in 2006 costing several thousand pounds, gearbox rebuild and top end engine rebuild inc new turbo charger around 80k miles by the 930 guru Bob Watson and all work is itemised in the comprehensive history file which includes all handbooks ,stamped service book, certificate of authenticity all mots and service invoices.
A recent service and general recommissioning just completed and she is ready for use.
On the road these 911s are staggering especially for a 1970s car and despite using a strong 4 speed gearbox which was capable of handling the power they are very useable and lots of fun whether cruising or on quick cross country trips.
