This top class Austin Healey Frogeye Sprite was built on the 22nd April 1959, despatched to dealership Carey & Lambert Limited in Southampton two days later. The Frogeye was supplied new in Iris Blue, with Blue trim, Black hood and was ordered with rev counter, front bumper, toughened windscreen and tonneau cover. A micro film of the original warranty form is also with the car giving the name of the first owner, Mr L C Dennis and confirms registration mark XTR 966 was issued in Southampton.
XTR 966 first came to us in 2018 and was driven to us faultlessly from Nottinghamshire. The Frogeye was sold to one of our long term customers who wanted open top motoring whilst his modern classic convertible was undergoing restoration work with our sister Company Malton Coachworks. Having being treated to a gearbox rebuild, crankshaft oil seal conversion, waxoyl and full service in our workshops last year, the Frogeye has covered 400 faultless miles and has been driven back over to us for swap over with the recent owners modern, now restored classic.
XTR 966 is well and truly sorted with a fit, strong engine with an incredibly well detailed engine, the bodywork is a delight with super straight panels and the Iris Blue paint finish excellent. The chrome work is of an excellent standard, the wire wheels and tyres excellent and the interior first class having been fully re-trimmed in recent years.
Whilst the body was restored after many years off the road in 1994 and a 1275cc engine fully rebuilt in 2002, its last long term has spent a lot of money taking the car to the next level. Over the past few thousand miles Longstone Tyres supplied brand new wheels and tyres and there are invoices for new brake discs and pads, new calipers, various poly bushes, anti-roll bar bushes, link arms, wheel bearings, a Frontline Development alloy radiator, full re-trim, new steering wheel, heater box, air-ducting, steering rack gaiters, engine mountings, clutch slave cylinder, master cylinder and new exhaust silencer.
Since this work the Frogeye has covered just a few thousand miles and is a brilliant car to drive. With its subtle and recommended upgrades, it really is ideal for regular use. With improved braking, cooling system and performance, this is a drivers Frogeye and it will not disappoint on the road. Its quick, responsive, lots of fun and the condition matches the impressive performance on the road. The car is very sharp, the engine bay top class and with its stunning paint and recently replaced interior, excellent weather gear, this is a very special car UK supplied subtly upgraded car.
