1988 Porsche 911 Carrera S 3.2 Targa
Original UK Right Hand Drive C16
Porsche Getrag G50 gearbox
Long term ownwership with recent cosmetic restoration
The Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 was launched in 1982 and featured an enlarged engine to 3.2 litres from the previous generation 911 SC with the Targa top being available from launch. Porsche first launched the Targa model in 1965, just a single year after the launch of the 911. The trademarked name is used to describe the roll over band and the removable roof panel which Porsche designed in response to fears that the US highways authority would ban fully convertible cars on safety grounds. The ban never came in to force but Porsche had developed the design and so carried on with production. The happy result is an open topped car that gives the cabin a sense of freedom and speed while better protecting you from uncomfortable wind buffeting at speed.
Porsche launched their newly designed 911, the Carrera 3.2, in 1984 reviving the Carrera name, previously used for competition versions of the earlier 356 model. It remained an air-cooled flat six but the new ‘3.2’ motor was 80% new and incorporated an effective cam chain tensioner and the associated lubrication system that at last addressed a long standing 911 shortcoming. This enlarged and extensively revised new engine produced 231bhp, 27 up on its predecessor, endowing the Carrera with excellent performance. 0-60 in 5.3, 0-100 in 13.6 seconds and a top speed of 152mph were figures not too far away from the legendary 1974 Turbo.
The Porsche 911 Carrera S 3.2 for sale at The Classic Motor Hub is a desirable late model Targa with the much improved G50 Getrag gearbox. It is an original UK RHD example first registered in April 1988. This car has covered 120,000 miles but thanks to its fantastic maintenance history is in perfect condition. The car presents impeccably inside and out, thanks to an expensive re-trim with Porsche trim specialists in 2010 and minor cosmetic attention.
The service manual shows the first few owners of the car kept up regular maintenance with Porsche dealer and independent specialist service stamps from new until 2010. The car comes from a collector who has owned the car for the last 10 years and kept a regular servicing schedule which can be seen through the invoices in the history file. As a result, this Porsche 911 Targa 3.2 Carrera pushes strongly from behind and feels tight over the bumps and through the bends.
