One of the very last proper MG Midgets – RWA, chrome bumper, 1275 A series engine; GAN5-147501G registered 13-08-1974 (last GAN5 Midget produced 17-10-74). Highly collectable, tax exempt. Bought as a non-runner about 5 years ago I spent 2 years tinkering with this car and well over £2000 spent mostly on new parts including re-con lead free head (receipt £296), front suspension rebuilt with new bushes & shocks, new starter motor, radiator, 4 new quality tyres, new top quality battery, clutch slave & master cylinders, fully electronic distributor & coil, seat belts and far too many small parts to list. Now driven regularly but still under 750 miles since putting back on the road.
Starts first time every time, even if left standing when I’m away (garage kept). Drives well (but always scope for a bit more fettling). LCB & Peco exhaust (too loud but easy enough to change). Neither the diff or gearbox whine or jump out of gear. Currently running single HIF 38 SU, but original twin HS2s & manifold supplied with the car (HIF 44 would be better at the top end but is a straight bolt on replacement for the 38 -which is actually better below 5000 RPM). Excellent oil pressure - ~45 psi hot at a smooth 700 RPM tickover, ~60 driving .
Bodywork and the damask red paintwork are tatty but is completely solid including the sills and floors; just some surface rust under the paint on the NSR wheelarch & quite a few paint blemishes (photos always flatter!). There are repairs to the front off-side inner wing support that are not pretty – but solid. I would replace this if I don’t sell and keep the car (Moss part no AHA5436) but never had any MoT advisories on this or any other structural integrity issues so not necessary. Door fit is not perfect but better than many, no rattles. I might even have the bumpers somewhere if you like that kind of thing, choice of period or earlier chrome grill. Hood looked OK last time I put it up but that was a few years ago, I’ve never tried driving with it up so can’t say how water tight it might be.
If you’re after a car a car to enjoy driving – not one to impress the neighbours; this could be for you. Will be sorely missed. Many more photos available on Flickr album https://flic.kr/s/aHsmbSh2mi Located 1 mile from M3 J4a, 20 min from M25.Genuine reason for sale.
