In the aftermath of the 1970's generation W116, Mercedes-Benz started a next-generation S-Class model in October 1973. The 'W126' project's goals' were aimed at creating an improved ride, better handling and improved fuel efficiency. These targets were aimed at sustaining 'S-Class' market leadership as the world's best-selling prestige luxury saloon. Following the 1970's oil crisis, Mercedes-Benz had made fuel efficiency a key strategy, even in the large V8 engine versions of the S-Class. The W126 design team were briefed to produce a car that was sleeker and more aerodynamic than the previous model. Lighter production materials and alloys as well as state of the art wind tunnel testing meant the car consumed 10% more miles per gallon than its predecessor. Following 6 years of hard work, the W126 was showcased at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt in 1979 with seven models featuring in the initial line-up. With the equivalent of 109,000 miles recorded, this 380SE has been part of this significant collection for many years, alongside several examples of the W116 model. Said to be in excellent condition, this is a good example of possibly the best executive car in the world during the 1980s. View 1985 Mercedes-Benz 380 SE For Sale on Coys.co.uk for further details.
