Here we have a delightful Land Rover Defender 90 County Station Wagon (Factory, not a conversion) with 300tdi engine and R380 gearbox. Low mileage of just over 110,000mls (most 300tdi Station Wagons are now north of 200,000mls) and with few previous owners.
Overview: Supplied new to Hereford & Worcester County Council on the 24th September 1996 by Droitwich Land Rover to be their site managers car, a change of keeper is recorded on the 1st April 1998 due to the council changing their name to Worcestershire County Council (so in reality remaining in the same ownership) until being disposed of on the 30th August 2005 with a mileage of just 69,000mls. The next keeper was a well known stalwart of the Series One Land Rover Club keeping it for just over 10 years until the 21st November 2015 having taken the mileage to just over 97,000mls. A genuine Factory built County Station Wagon – not a utility that has been dealer converted later in life this is a real delight to use.
Structure: Very good and solid. The chassis still had its original rear crossmember however this had had some welding following its only MOT failure in October 2018 – the chassis rails were however still solid. I have just had the crossmember removed from the chassis rails and a new genuine crossmember fitted in the same way as original (so no horrible 'legs' or extensions sleeved over the chassis rails) and in a few years time it will be very difficult to see anything has been done. The rest of the chassis is very god indeed without any other repairs and with evidence of previous rust proofing throughout its life. The bulkhead is very very good indeed with original corners and footwells and no welded ever having been carried out or needed.
Bodywork: Incredibly presentable with very straight wings and mostly original paint bar the odd touch-up here and there. Original decals throughout. Solid doors without any rot to the frames (very rare) and all glass original.
Interior: Original Moorland trim throughout in very good order, I have replaced the front seat base foams as they were going powdery but I retained the original covers. Good carpets throughout and correct Land Rover branded over mats including the rear (not shown in pictures). Unaltered dash board in excellent condition with everything working correctly including the original Land Rover radio.
Mechanicals: In excellent mechanical condition and having just had all oils changed with top quality Castrol oils to the correct spec, all filters (Land Rover Genuine), new cam belt, water pump, auxiliary drive belt, tensioner and ‘P’ gasket (all Land Rover Genuine parts used), valve clearances checked and new Rimmer Bros Stainless Exhaust fitted along with a Bosch heavy-duty battery and new brake servo. Starts instantly with hardly any smoke and drives superbly with tight, precise steering, gearchange and brakes. Pulls very strongly and smoothly and is very usable returning over 30mpg (I have done several 400 mile trips in recent months) in as much comfort as a Defender can offer!
Paperwork: Original book pack present along with current V5C in my name and copies of previous V5’s detailing changes of keeper. The original service book is present but has only recent stamps in it as the Council maintained their vehicles in their own workshop. Current and previous MOT’s from 2004 to date (current MOT expires 4th October 2019) and tax disks from 2006 until they did away with them in 2014. Two complete sets of key with two Factory alarm/immobiliser remotes (both working and with new batteries).
All in all a really delightful example of a classic Defender in highly usable condition, getting very rare to find in such un-messed with order. The private plate in the pictures will be removed prior to sale unless the new owner would like it by separate negotiation and it will revert to its original ‘P’ registration (on its original dealer supplied plates).
