2001 Porsche 911 - 996 GT3 RS For Sale

Introduced in 1997, the Porsche 996 was the first 911 model to be built with a water-cooled engine in deference to the age-old format of air-cooled units for which the marque had become synonymous with. Initially, the standard 996 Carrera road car had a flat-six engine of 3.4 litre capacity. The more limited models such as Targa, Carrera 4S, Turbo, GT2 and GT3 received 3.6 litre versions. The 996 GT3 road car was built to homologate the race versions and boasted some enviable technical pedigree. The cylinder heads of the GT3 engine were based on those from the 959 and the block was the M64 type from the 964, it being stronger than the lighter 993 M64 block. The 6-speed gearbox of the 996 GT3 was derived from the type Porsche used in the 993 GT2 but had a cable rather than pushrod mechanism which saved weight. Whilst the ‘Cup’ cars served well in National and Supercup Championships, the GT3 R was the first of the internationally homologated GT3 race cars and was followed by the RS (from 2001) and finally the RSR (from 2004). All three variants dominated their classes in all major championships around the world and the model remains one of the most successful series of Porsche racecars to this day. Built by Porsche Motorsports either to a customer’s specific requirements or, more commonly supplied in standard specification for customers to modify to whichever race series they competed in (FIA or ACO regulations). A new class called LM GT was created at Le Mans specifically for the new GT3 R and other manufacturers soon joined with their models. The Porsche Certificate of Origin on file confirms chassis WP0ZZZ99Z1S692096 as a genuine factory 2001 GT3 RS. The GT3 RS cars of 2001 are categorised as 1S series and it is understood that fewer than sixty were constructed. Chassis 1S692096 was delivered new to Japan to the R & D Sport team and competed in the All Japan Grand Touring Car Championships (otherwise known as Super GT) of 2001 and 2002. Throughout this period, the car raced in the striking blue and white colours of main sponsor Leyjun and was driven exclusively by the Japanese pairing of ‘Osamu’ and Takamasa Nakagawa. Car and team performed successfully with many top ten placings in GT300 class including a 3rd place at Sportsland Sugo in 2002. Japanese Super GT regulations do differ somewhat from the basis of what is otherwise an FIA/ ACO homologated racecar. Amongst the modifications carried out it has a different air inlet setup to the engine and the rear bonnet is obviously vented according to this. The car was also slightly modified by the team who repositioned the radiators from behind the front bumper to under the front lid for improved cooling and it features a higher rear wing. The side sills are different to standard in order to incorporate the rear-vented front wings (again not standard), the front bumper is standard albeit with the radiator vents blocked off. Akin to this, the coolant radiators have been relocated to the front compartment area and as such the front bonnet is vented to assist throughflow for cooling (this setup ironically mimics the infamous 993/996 GT1 that predates it!). Inside the car the battery has been relocated, an AP pedal box has been fitted with accompanying bias valve and aside from Driver/ Team preferable ergonomic arrangements it is largely as per it would have been supplied. Running on a (standard) Bosch 3.1 ECU and with Stack dashboard it should be akin to any other 996 of its type to run. The car has been preserved in the same condition as it last raced at Suzuka in 2002 although it was latterly converted for Japanese street use! A Japanese road registration document accompanies the file should a would-be purchaser wish to explore this avenue once again. In keeping with this, there are air horns fitted along with a handbrake lock-off system, auxiliary cooling fans to the aforementioned radiators and relays to operate the lighting system per Japanese road requirements. Sold with taxes paid and in running condition, it is offered strictly on the basis that we recommend any subsequent use be done so following independent professional preparation. A lovely, genuine basis for a variety of upcoming events and at an unbeatable price point.
