1968 Mk2 MGB GT -Primrose Yellow, Older Resto - MGBGT MG BGT For Sale

In my opinion, late 1960s MGBs are definitely the ones to have. They retain all the purity of the earlier cars, but with the usability and nicer features of the later ones. These cars provide an excellent investment opportunity for somebody that wants to enjoy their money, rather than having it sitting in the bank!

This particular car was in the previous owner’s possession for a good number of years, and the car has been very well looked after following major restoration works. It’s just been returned to the road following a period of a few years where the owner didn’t have time to enjoy the car properly but it was regularly run and driven around the block to keep things moving. The car, is of course, tax and MOT exempt.

The car is painted in gorgeous Primrose Yellow. The engine was replaced with a new Unipart Gold-Seal unit in the 1990s, and I still have the receipt to confirm this.

The recent recommissioning included a full oil and filter change, coolant system flush, rebuild, tune and balance of the carburettors, and a resetting of the ignition timing - as well as a complete checkover. The car now runs very sweetly indeed, ticking over smoothly at 700rpm. The engine fires up from cold with ease and isn’t overly tappety like most B-Series engines are. The engine pulls strongly and runs at the correct temperature - oil pressure is just where it should be. Overdrive is fitted, and is working. The gearbox has a really nice, tight selector gate and is a pleasure to use.

The car drives very nicely, stops in a straight line and doesn’t clunk and rattle like so many of these cars do. The car is fitted with very expensive Knock-On Minilite style wheels, rather than wires – a rare and desirable accessory! The front suspension is in good order, with no excess play in the king pins or wheel bearings.

Bodily, as you can see in the pictures, the car is very straight indeed. The doors shut with a lovely ‘clunk’ and the gaps are pretty good. The original aluminium bonnet is still fitted – a bit of a rarity these days! At the time of restoration, the car was fitted with new front wings, rear wings and doors too. The paintwork has an excellent shine with only the odd age-related chip here and there. Door and wing bottoms are all solid, with no evidence of filler etc. Wing-top seams are nice and solid. No – it is NOT a concourse show car, but presents nicely. There are a few minor scuffs and dings here and there, but nothing that detracts from the overall appearance in any way. The chromework is in excellent order.

The underside is clean and tidy, having had new sills and various other bits and bobs at the time of restoration. Front inner wing trumpets are rock solid, as are the sills, inner sills and floors. The car has not been waxoyled so you can see exactly what’s what – I would suggest if you plan to use the car in all weathers it is probably something that would be worth doing – but I decided to leave it as-is so any buyer can see exactly what’s there.

The interior is very nice indeed – it benefits from some very nice period-style bucket seats up front, along with an excellent carpet set, very clean door cards and headlining. The dashboard has been fitted with a very expensive (£400) Carbon Fibre dash cover – easily removed and sold if you don’t like it, but I actually think it looks quite sporting, and fits well with the bucket seats! A period Prinz radio is also fitted.

There’s plenty of paperwork dating back to the mid-1980s which paints a picture of the car’s history – always nice to have.

It’s rare to find a BGT at this sort of price that hasn’t been messed around with and tarted up. As stated, it’s not a concourse show-standard car, but it oozes history, and, in my opinion, has been done just right. I don’t think you’ll find an MGB in this condition, with such low ownership, for this sort of money!

If this was a concourse Mk2, it would be worth in excess of £10k, so there is plenty of room for making improvements as and when you see fit. Alternatively, you could just use and enjoy the car, exactly as it was designed to do! I think I have priced the car very sensibly – you would struggle to find another well-restored, roadgoing, usable Mk2 for less than this!
