Land- Rover Series 1 88" - 1957
This vehicle is offered for sale on behalf of the estate of a deceased relative.
The Land-Rover is a 1957 year Series 1 88". The Chassis number 111703**, Engine number 1706091**, which makes it highly likely for it to have been original to the vehicle - The Land-Rover has been repainted at some point in the past and has excellent quality Exmoor tilt and seats fitted.
Although the vehicle was built in 1957, there is no record of registration for road use before 2003 - from information supplied by a previous owner we think it was used for many years as a fire engine on a private airfield (some red paint is still visible on tilt sticks and tailgate) - after that it went to work on a smallholding in Wales and was eventually sold on to my father when the previous owner no longer needed it. Recorded mileage is 41,800 miles which, although cannot be guaranteed correct, looks believable given the condition and wear on the foot pedals etc.
My father bought this Land-Rover 6 years ago and enjoyed driving it around the local area and, more latterly, the farm as his health declined. It has been stored in a dry workshop for the last three years and is in running but not perfect condition. The V5C is present and correct for the vehicle.
Axles and springs are good and wheels are fitted with Dunlop Roadtrak Major 6.50 *16 tyres (Similar to the Avon Traction Mileage tread pattern).
Bodywork is straight and although not factory new, shows only light evidence of it's sixty odd years of life with the odd scrape and minor weld repair of the driver's door top.
Bulkhead is sound and only shows light corrosion in the usual places on the door pillars - the footwells are good.
Carburettor needs setting up - starts and runs fine but misfires occasionally on pickup (I suspect the accelerator pump setting needs tweaking).
Brakes pull to left - Right front brake piston could probably do with freeing off.
Rear exhaust box needs replacing.
The Chassis is in overall good condition and has been corrosion inhibited with ACF50 whilst the vehicle was in storage. However, the rear cross member has been replaced at some point in the vehicle's life and there is now a corroded section on chassis above the RHS rear spring hanger forward of rear crossmember that is in need of attention before road use.
Overall, this is good vehicle for somebody with a bit of time and the will to sort the minor niggles - It will then give years of enjoyment and be an appreciating asset. It is priced sensibly to allow for the minor work that it requires to bring it back up to spec and any inspection is welcomed.
