- Desirable Type 2 Westfalia camper - Lovely condition due to spending most of its life in Arizona - Fitted with uprated Porsche 2.2 engine - Rock ‘n’ Roll bed, BN-2 gas heater system, fridge, stove and extending table - Genuine period Fuchs alloy wheels Volkswagen continued the great success of the Type 1 Beetle with a practical commercial vehicle that cleverly utilized much of the Beetle’s mechanical underpinnings. Pragmatically named “Type 2 Transporter”, enthusiasts have christened it with a variety of nicknames including Samba, Kombi, Microbus, Bus, and “Rugbrød” – Danish for Rye Bread – to describe VW’s ubiquitous Type 2. Much like the Beetle before it, the Transporter was brilliant in its simplicity and versatility, and so was offered in a wide array of configurations: it could be specified as a simple panel van, a multi-passenger bus, a single cab utility pickup, a double-cab pickup, or a recreational camper. The earliest versions were powered by a 24 horsepower, 1131cc air-cooled flat four shared with the Beetle. Unsurprisingly, this underwhelming engine was enlarged multiple times over the course of production to keep up with demand for more power. By 1966, the engine had grown to 1,493 cc and power had more than doubled to 54 bhp. In as early as 1951, VW contracted with Westfalia-Werke of Germany to convert Transporters into recreational camper vans. They included the cleverly-designed ‘pop-top’ that increased interior space and allowed users to stand up inside the van. The pop-top became Westfalia’s hallmark for many years to come, particularly on the hugely popular Type 2 Westfalia camper vans of the 1970s. Westfalia offered numerous options for everyone from the casual weekender to the serious cross-country traveler. Hippie culture in the 1960s and 1970s popularised these quirky campers, and today’s enthusiasts covet the VW “Westy” for its incredible practicality, period charm and status as a cultural icon. This 1974 example has been uprated to include a much more powerful 2.2 engine from a Porsche 914 – the perfect choice to give this camper enough oomph to deal with modern motorway driving and any other terrain you might need to traverse. Period Fuchs alloys give this Type 2 Westfalia camper an added bit of retro appeal, and are the ideal choice to replace the original steel wheels. The rock ‘n’ roll bed, BN-2 gas heater system, fridge, stove and extending table provide all the comfortable facilities needed to spend a weekend away – or even take this camper on an extended roadtrip across continents.
