For sale is my BMW 525i in Orient blue metallic. I have owned the car for 8 years, putting a lot of money and effort into resurrecting it as it was bound for the scrap yard when I saved it. Now the time has come for it to move on to it's next home as I have lost the enthusiasm to do the bits it needs. It's been stood now for 2 years outside my place of work, but it passed the MOT last week only requiring 2 front antiroll bar links and the park brake mechanism freeing off. I will be as honest as I can about the car below, but please allow that it's 24 years old so please come and look for yourself before bidding
2 advisories on the MOT - condition of fuel pipes at the rear (these have been mentioned every year for the 8 years I've had it and don't appear to be getting any worse, but would advise replacing if you intend to use it a lot) and condition of the sills (he advised them because it has the plastic sill covers so they cannot be properly inspected)
The bodywork, in my opinion, is in very good condition for the age. It's now starting to bubble around the fuel cap, the N/S/R wing (very minor) and the bottom of the front passenger door. The laquer is also coming off the top of the O/S/F wing. There are obviously other age related scuffs and marks.
The engine is as sweet as a nut with 193k under it's belt, not using any oil or water - doesn't overheat or anything untoward. Other than a thermostat housing and services I've never had to lay a spanner on the engine and it's never let me down. A few years ago I took it to Brussels for the weekend and it didn't miss a beat.
The gearbox (once the oil is warm) drives and changes perfectly. It likes to tick over for 5-10 minutes from cold before setting off as it will hold in first gear too long, after that it's fine.
The dial set, in the time it's been standing, has decided to throw a wobbly. The dials and warning lights all work but the LCD display at the bottom sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. Photo attached.
The headlining also parted company in this time, I have made a temporary repair to stop it hanging down over the rear window. It'll want some attention whether you tidy up my repair or change it.
The leather interior is in very good condition with no rips or tears, just a bit of wear to the drivers bolster as you'd expect. The top for the rear arm rest is missing.
The interior boot trim is all a bit tatty and ill-fitting, and the tool kit from the inside of the boot lid is missing. The boot lid itself is in excellent condition and there is no corrosion by the reg. lights where they usually go.
The central locking on the drivers door doesn't work, but it does on the other 3 and boot lid.
It's got the proper BMW M Sport 17" Parallel alloys (not the replica ones) which in my opinion set it off a treat. Would probably benefit from a set of tyres as they'll all be flat spotted from standing, tread-wise they're all good though. It does suffer with the E34 vibration at 55 mph, usually getting the wheels balanced is enough to fade it to a tolerable level.
I'm not sure there's a lot more to say about it and I will be sorry to see her go, but it's a nice car and it deserves more than to be left to deteriorate. Hopefully someone will give it the next burst of enthusiasm it needs.
