- Icon of 1990s motor racing

At the start of the 1990s, the end of the World Sports Prototype Championship heralded the renaissance of the GT category on circuits worldwide. With a strong track record in endurance racing over the previous 40 years, Porsche announced its intention to remain at the top level in competition by unveiling the new 964 Carrera RS 3. 8L in 1993. The 964 Carrera RS type M64. 03, derived from the Carrera Cup, provided Porsche with homologation in Group N/ GT, and was followed by the 964 RS 3. 8L type M64. 04. This version was also destined for international competition while remaining within reach for the amateur driver. Built entirely by hand at the factory competition department in Weissach, the 964 Carrera RS 3, 8L excelled in championships such as the BPR in France, the ADAC-GT in Germany, the IMSA in the US and, of course, the Le Mans 24 Hours, where it won the GT class in its first outing in June 1993. The new 3. 8L was a more extreme version of the 964 RS 3. 6L, developed further in terms of weight gain, engine power, aerodynamics and performance. Developed by the great rally driver Walter Röhrl, the Carrera RS 3. 8L was an out-and-out race car, tamed just enough to be driven on the road… The eye is drawn immediately to the flared wheel arches similar to turbo models. The front spoiler has a special lip designed to reduce lift while at the back, there is a large twin-blade spoiler with the same aerodynamic function. The shell, derived from the Turbo 3. 6L, have been fitted with aluminium doors and bonnet and the engine cover is carbon-kevlar. The side and rear windows are made of thinned glass. These features allowed the 964 Carrera RS 3, 8L to record a weight of just 1 140kg, almost 100 kg less than the 1992 Carrera RS. The re-bored engine (type M64/ 04), producing 300 bhp, displayed all the features of a competition engine. With lighter pistons, polished cylinder head ports to enhance the exchange of gases, special con-rods and dry sump, this is a competition engine, with all components marked " R " for Renn, or " racing " in German. The gearbox is associated with a shorter, more direct drive, and it has limited slip differential. The cockpit, designed for competition and stripped of all non-essential features, has the appearance of a car ready to start an endurance race. The steering wheel hub has been lengthened by 25mm, the pedals modified and the car is fitted with two bucket seats in black and grey leather. Lowered by 40mm, the ride height accentuates the dynamic appearance and impression of speed, something this impressive machine is not short of, being capable of driving from 0 to 100km/ h in under 5 seconds and boasting a top speed of 274 km/ h.

With just 55 examples of the road-going 3. 8 RS, comprising 40 type M004 " Street version " and 15 Clubsport type M003 models versus 51 racing RSR type M005, the Carrera RS 3. 8L is rarely seen on the market. Our type M004 example has a fully transparent history and has never left France. The car has only had two owners from new and was first delivered in June 1993 to the late Philippe Aunay, a former President of the Porsche Club of France. Eric Coicaud acquired the car in October 2016 directly from the Aunay family. It had covered 61 131 km at that time, and has not been driven since. The history of the car is documented in the file that contains documents signed by Jürgen Barth, the original order and other registration document. As with all the cars in his collection, Eric Coicaud wanted to perfect the presentation of the 3. 8L RS, and took it to Porsche Imsa Rouen to deal with one or two flaws on the bodywork. The project could not be completed unfortunately and remained in this condition until recently, when it returned to Imsa Rouen to be completely repainted, and now presents the stunning lustre of its original light yellow livery, reference " Hellgelb ". All mats have been replaced, making the car look even more like it has just left the factory, and it comes with its tool kit, jack and service book. As the 3. 8L RS has not been driven in recent years, it will require a full recommission. This is an ultra-powerful 911, extremely rare, show-casing Porsche's expertise and savoir-faire in " competition client " cars. In brief, it is a must.
