For sale, I have my beautiful Austin Allegro from 1979. I’ve known it for several years and was able to buy it 2 years ago when the last owner lost interest. Being a Special, its a very rare model; one website says there are only two left. This example is particularly special in that it is in Denim Blue with black velour interior. The car is MoT’d until March 2020, by which time it will be tax and sadly, MoT exempt.
These cars always suffered badly from rot so you’ll be pleased to read that in the past few years, this example has been totally stripped, all the rot cut out and new metal expertly welded in. If repair panels came available, they were bought and fitted. These include factory front wings, part inner wings and front valance parts. The shell was bare-metalled and professionally painted in the gorgeous, original Denim Blue. Once painted, the whole thing was literally smothered in various Dinitrol rust-proofing products by the last owner. It went everywhere and he had to drive home in his underpants. I’m still cleaning it up in places.
The 1500 engine starts easily and with the 5-speed gearbox, the car goes along very nicely, easily keeping up with modern traffic. Little work has been needed on the engine apart from regular servicing and a new clutch slave cylinder. It has also been fitted with electronic ignition and a new battery.
Inside, the black velour feels plush and the seats are very comfortable. There are still a few little jobs to be done for example, the plastic, stick-on wood trim is peeling around the instruments and could do with a dose of impact adhesive.
Outside, the chrome bumpers and other shiny bits are all in good condition. The vinyl roof is sound and looks lovely against the blue bodywork.
Though not quite finished, this is a really nice example of BL’s gorgeous Allegro. With a little bit of DIY fettling, it could be made perfect. You really need to come and see it for yourself and it’s stored just east of Telford in Shropshire, 3 minutes off J4 of the M54.
The only reason I’m offering it for sale is to help finance restoration of my Crayford Allegro and as I’m incredibly busy already, I’m in no real rush to start so though I’m open to offers, please don’t be silly about it. I’ll only consider offers from those who have actually made the effort to view the car and the lucky new owner will receive a memory stick containing the photos I have taken of the work carried out.
I have a large stock of new and used Allegro parts I’ve accumulated over the years and would be more than happy to help the new owner out if I can.
