1973 VW Type 2 Westfalia Factory Camper, 1972 RHD. For Sale
For Sale 1973 Volkswagen Type 2, tax and M.O.T. exempt. Owned for the last 18 years ! Four previous owners only. Original factory Westfalia right hand drive van. Very reluctant sale. All the work has been done.
The floor is 100% original including all out riggers and jacking points. Chassis is un-welded. Van was Ziebarted from new. Very little panel work was required during original restoration. Battery tray and lower quarter cab arches and off side sill. The gutters are straight and genuine.
I used to work for Volkswagen / Audi as a panel beater. I restored this van for myself, 18 years ago using genuine parts when available and leaded any repairs before refinishing with filler. All internal cavities where wax oiled using VAG pressure injected wax. Put back the way it was built !
I have over £11000 in receipts which does not include the restoration or labour.
The engine was replaced with a Vege 1.6 Twin port as original. Rebuilt original carburetor. These have about six thousand miles only. All engine tin wear has recently been powder coated. This is the original tin wear also, so it fits and works as it should. An alternator conversion was fitted instead of the dynamo. Tank has recently been out (repainted) to fit a new sender unit, VDO. All fuel pipes have been replaced, breather and filler.
Certificate from the factory and a folder full of paperwork including original service book, service punch card and camping instruction booklet. Before and after pictures, so you can see how good the van was before I got it. Roof rack bars galvanised with marine grade stainless steel fittings.
The van was put back as original. Small modifications include Petronix distributor and electronic ignition, vacuum advanced not 009. So no erratic flat spots. Recent work includes new four GKN ( OEM ) drive shaft CV joints, inner and outer. Replacement curtains as per original specifications. New gear shift bushes and seals. New Hella headlamps and stainless steel pushrod tubes. Original gearbox in situ.
New roof canvas included but the original one is not that bad, does not need replacing yet, two minor holes.
If you want a great camper thats been looked after and rust free and not full of filler or fibre-glass than this is for you. Not lowered or chopped. Original wheels powder coated on correct 3 ply Vredestein tyres.
In this condition and unmolested they don't come up very often, especially RHD variants.
Most of its time with me the van spent in dry storage, thus the milage of 85000, which I believe to be genuine. I purchased this ( 2000 ) of a close friends father who also owned the bus a number of years, since 1976.
Lots of spares including a rebuilt starter motor again, Bosch ( OEM ). Serious buyers only please, no time wasters and no part exchange wanted or considered. NO silly offers, as happy to keep. Cash deposit and payment via bank transfer only. I can arrange an MOT if so required. If you know your vans this will not disappoint.
Restoring a van is false economy as the parts have gone silly.
Its not mint, but its one of the best genuine used vans out there. I hope this description enables you to see where the value is with this van. Yes you can get cheaper. Ultimately you get what you pay for ! Any inspection welcomed. Please bear in mind its 46 years old. Looked after it will do those years again and appreciating in value, a true useable classic. More photos and video of engine running. I would urge a viewing. Have a look at the other out there first.
