Here for sale is a great MX5. I have had the car for nearly two years, and it has never let me down. I took time finding a good one. I have owned an Mx5 MK1 before, so I have learned the hard way what to look for.
This is what I wanted:
British Racing Green with Tan Leather and Nardi wheel
Limited Slip Diff
1.6 (I much prefer the higher revving engine- I think it really suits the nimble handling)
I finally found this one!
I sorted all the usual things that I have come to expect EVEN with those 7K+ ones you see advertised that claim to be "PERFECT".
Every Mx5 Mk1 seem to have these issues because, well, they are quite old now aren't they? That's why they are skyrocketing in value.. because they are now very very nearly CLASSIC CARS!!! And what's more, not only are they affordable, they are reliable and pretty and FUN. So the list, which turned this car from a fun, useable classic into a super-usable, everyday driver, capable of travelling the continent ( I have taken it to Rome and back TWICE since I've had it, and it's been to Ireland twice too. It behaved perfectly, and they are surprisingly comfortable) I recommend driving Italian roads in it! It likes hairpins and windy mountain roads, but also cruising around Rome with the top down.
In order to achieve this level reliability / usabilty I have done the following works:
Timing belt changed
Water Pump and thermostat changed
Rocker gasket changed
Belts and Cables
Uniroyal All Weather tyres
Front Suspension Changed ( they had become a little old and tired )
Ok well that's all the usual stuff. Next is things that make a difference and I believe ALL Mx5's need them doing, especially those low mileage ones that have been sitting around for years not being used! Because cars LIKE being used.
New Deluxe 'Mohair' Tan roof. No Leaks, use it all year round!
HEATED rear GLASS window INCLUDING the electrical loom and switch so you can actually use it! It's amazing how many have the window but no way of heating it!
Upgraded Zenon Headlights, so you can drive properly at night!
New Fuel pump and filter.. it is amazing the difference this makes. The old ones are covered in sticky ancient stuff from sitting around for years.
New Air Flow Meter. Always best to replace it, and it does seem to run better.
FULLY WAXOILED underneath. Because they really need it. I don't want it to rust!
NEW Electric window kit installed.. the old ones were getting slow and it was only a matter of time.
All of this really makes a difference.
Then the creature comforts:
An amazing bluetooth stereo with upgraded speakers in the doors and in the seat headrests, phone handsfree kit and full DAB radio kit. This cost nearly 1K. The result is that you can drive on the motorway with the roof down at 70+ and listen to music!
A removable boot rack INCLUDING the luggage bag that attaches... this makes long journeys possible!
It has a clock. Not a big deal, but nice to have...
The car is otherwise original, it has the original spare wheel (with its cover ) and it has its tonneau cover.
It recently flew through its MOT without any advisories.
It does have a bit of paint missing from the front bumper, as seen in the photos. Someone reversed into it, which flexed the fibreglass bumper, causing the damage to the paint, but not to the bumper. It has a light scratch on the bonnet where a neighbour dragged a suitcase across it.
The paint job is not perfect, but easily fixed if it's important to you.
The car is in London W10
