1952 JAGUAR XK120 ROADSTER RHD - BODY OFF CHASSIS RESTORATION For Sale

The Jaguar XK120 was manufactured between 1948 and 1954 and was Jaguar's first post-war sports car. Shown at the 1948 London Motor Show as a test-bed for the new XK engine, it caused a sensation and led to William Lyons being persuaded that it should become a production model. At the time of its launch it was the world's fastest standard production car and the '120' in its name referred to its top speed and in May 1949 on a specially closed section of the auto route between Jabbeke and Aeltre in Belgium, it was timed through the flying mile at 126. 448mph (203. 498km/ h) by the Royal Automobile Club of Belgium.

The XK120 set new standards of comfort, roadholding and performance for British Sports cars and in keeping with the Jaguar tradition, there was nothing to touch it at the price. It was a genuine 120mph car capable of sustained high-speed cruising and from launch until the end of production in the autumn of 1954 its popularity never slackened, especially in overseas markets that took over 85 percent of total output. The XK120 would prove to be the most popular of the XK series with 12, 078 examples built.

According to its Jaguar-Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate, this fabulous and beautifully restored example Chassis No: 673343 - Engine no: W6989-8 is a 'Matching Numbers' car and was built in Jaguar's Browns Lane factory in Coventry on 18th December 1952 and was exported to Jaguar Dealer Hoffman in Los Angeles, California, USA on 6th January 1953.

The car remained in the USA until it was purchased from American Classic Car dealer 'Hyman Ltd' of St Louis, Missouri, USA and imported back to the UK in September 1998.

It was purchased by a Mr Lionel Parker from Bath as a restoration project for his retirement and he commenced a full body-off' chassis rebuild and conversion from left- to right-hand drive in the process. It was the owner's intention that the car should be restored perfectly, so the original chassis was replaced with a brand new chassis supplied by marque specialist Martin Wentworth's A1 XKS of Stoke Golding, Leicestershire.

The bodywork was stripped to bare metal and new panels were fitted as required and it was repainted in Old English White to compliment the new Red leather interior. The 3. 4 Litre Engine was rebuilt and the original Moss Gearbox was overhauled, the front Brakes were upgraded to 'Cooper-Craft' Disc Brakes, New front and rear suspension including rear leaf springs with the correct leather covers, Koni adjustable telescopic Shock Absorbers were fitted, new wiring looms, new chrome fittings and many more new parts which are too many to list.

This restoration took almost 5 years to complete and it was finally finished in 2012 and the car was then UK registered in October 2012 and allocated the very nice period number plate 547 YUM'.

Mr Parker had achieved what he set out to do and only drove a few hundred miles in the car before selling it through Bonham's auction at RAF Hendon in April 2013 when it was purchased by the current owner.

Since then, lots of enhancements have been carried out on the car during his 6 years of ownership including the fitting of EZ Electric Power Steering including an EZ wood rimmed 'Le Mans' style Steering Wheel, Getrag 5 Speed Gearbox, Hi-Torque Starter Motor, extended drivers footwell with a new Pedal Box, new Fuel Tank and sender unit, new Red Mohair Hood and Weather equipment, rebuilt Carburettors, performance electric Fuel Pump, new Brake lines, new Aluminium Radiator + 'Kenlowe' electric cooling fan, all instruments refurbished with upgraded White dials, Electronic Ignition and a new set of Michelin 600 x 16 Pilote Tyres.

This example must surely be one of the best currently available for sale and over £60, 000 has been spent on its restoration and upgrades by the last 2 owners. It has covered less than 1, 000 miles since the rebuild was completed in October 2012 and is a very 'drivable' and reliable car. It does have its original 3. 4 Litre engine, although it has had a replacement unleaded cylinder head fitted at some point during its life.

The car really is exceptional to drive and the modifications including the extended drivers footwell, electric power steering and the 5 Speed Getrag Gearbox do make a huge difference to the car and overall, this really is a car that will be perfect for touring this summer and a very good investment of course!

There are not many examples as good as this one on the market today and it has been priced very competitively to sell!

Upon sale the car will come with our own customer care package including a new MOT (although exempt), pre sales Service, HPI/ provenance Checks, 55-point pre-delivery inspection and 6 months mechanical breakdown Parts & Labour Warranty which can be upgraded and extended at additional cost if required.
