Of all the factory-penned body styles built on Bugatti’s Type 57 chassis, perhaps none is as significant as the Atalante. With only 34 examples produced from 1936 to 1938, the T57 Atalante is much rarer than the Stelvio, Ventoux, or Galibier, and the design’s purposeful lines and proportions, provided sportier packaging for the 57’s advanced dual-overhead cam engine and independently sprung chassis. Exceeded in cachet today only by the Type 57SC Atlantic, the Atalante is overwhelmingly regarded as the most sporting iteration of the celebrated Type 57.
Originally ordered by Mr Fernoud Crouzet, he placed the order with Bugatti and the body was specified to his personal design. The rolling chassis was delivered to Gangloff on 18thFebruary 1938. 57633 was completed and first registered on 7thApril 1938 with the original number plates being made by Gangloff.
With the outbreak of war in 1939 this Atalante was hidden under hay in a French barn, and then subsequently sold to Pierre Vidal from Toulouse on June 30th 1941. The second sale took place in 1943 with 57633 moving to Paris and benefitting from an overhaul by Bugatti.
The next move was the London, however still under French ownership and being used by the French embassy. In 1948 the sale moved further north to Edinburgh and purchased by Mr William Merr.
The next owners were Dr HJ Webb and Mr JGH Carter, Mr Carter had a considerable amount of workd done by Lemon Burton (Bugatti Specialist) of which included changing to a Zenith Carburettor. In 1955 57633 was then sold to the Famous Author and Bugatti expert Mr Kenneth Ullyett. Mr Ullyett stated that this car was a piece of art, after his death his widow kept the car until her death, 57633 was then sold at Sothebys auction in November 1987, at this time the car was in an un-restored condition.
In 2005 this Atalante was subject to a complete nut and bolt, 100 point concours restoration, details from the restoration listed below:
Body was removed from the chassis, completely disassembled and repainted.
Wheels have been powder coated.
Front suspension nickel plated.
Rear axle jack guides installed as originally supplied.
All scraping on engine redone to original pattern.
New radiator core.
Correct Stromberg carburettor installed.
Complete re-wire in period style.
Body stripped to bare metal and completely rebuilt, including wood framing in doors.
All parts re-plated.
Interior wood re-finished.
Interior upholstery re-trimmed.
19 years on from restoration 57633 is still offered in absolute concours condition, she has had seldom use other than the odd classic car event, however the maintenance has remained to the highest of standards, a thorough mechanical fine tune was completed by renowned Gentry Restorations in 2008.
Aesthetically the coachwork is certainly some of the finest in existence, the body curves are simply mesmerising and are certainly enhanced by the body colours. Along the sides of the bonnets are three rows of precisely pressed louvers, there are Carrosserie Gangloff makers plates to the sill panels, and unique bumpers to the front and rear.
The seats and door cards are beautifully trimmed in Ostrich leather, all of course un-marked. Wool carpets to the floors and broad cloth to the head lining.
This truly is one of finest cars to pass through our hands, a true concours car that is immaculate both on the outside and underneath. Viewings by appointment only.
