The P1 magic began with the body of a WRX STi Type R two-door, which would become the first Impreza coupe available in the UK. The chassis was put through a long (and costly) type approval process before it would be A-OK for British B-roads. Mind you, once it got to those B-roads, it was probably the quickest thing for miles. The Subaru Impreza P1 was bestowed a pumped up 2.0-litre engine, which brought forth a raucous 280 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque, and put it to the ground through a specially tuned suspension for UK roads. That was about 65 horsepower more than the runner-up UK-market Impreza Turbo. Eibach springs underneath, complemented by STi dampers, uprated anti-roll bars, and a sleek set of titanium-finish OZ wheels.
All 1,000 Subaru Impreza P1s dressed to match in lustrous Sonic Blue paint and boasted a functional aero-kit crafted by Peter Stevens, designer of the McLaren F1. Inside and out there’s Prodrive badging, but more importantly a set of Prodrive sport seats. It all still looks fantastic, and it’s hard to imagine this beast is now 19 years old.
