When De Tomaso unveiled the Pantera at the 1970 New York Auto Show, with its new model came with new ambitions for the marque. The Mangusta had been only moderately successful, on account of its lack of reliability and its challenging handling. As a result the Italian manufacturer called in Gian Paolo Dallara, joint creator of the mythical Lamborghini Miura. With a relatively lightweight monocoque shell and a bigger version of the same mid-mounted Ford V8, the Pantera was a better car to drive and went on to become the most successful model the company ever made, with over 7200 produced. At first sold in association with Ford, the first version, even when burdened with anti-smog gear, gave a strong performance. The Pantera was also successful in competition – not least at Le Mans, Sebring, Monza, Silverstone and the Nürburgring – and became one of the emblematic mid-engined GTs of the 1970s. It continued in production until 1995, but even after a life of 25 years it has always been something of a rarity.
Announced in 1981, the Pantera GT5 featured a new bodykit with wide glassfibre wheelarch extensions, allowing the fitment of the same Campagnolo wheels as used on the Group 4 racers. This particular example was first registered on 28 January 1983 and is equipped with the optional ‘Delta’ rear spoiler. The property of a French collector for the past ten years, it was previously owned by an enthusiast from the Toulouse area. When the current owner acquired the car he had the engine and transmission thoroughly overhauled by Still Racing, a specialist company run by Eric Hélary, best known for having won 1993’s Le Mans 24-hours at the wheel of a Peugeot 905. The bills for the operation, back in 2011, came to more than 8000€.
Since then the Pantera has been garaged and only occasionally taken out to keep the mechanicals in good order. As a result it is in fine original condition and in full working order. The leather seats and the carpeting have been restored and the four Michelin TB15 tyres are in good condition; an amusing detail is that the Momo wheel has a JPS monogram, a reminder of how the well-known cigarette manufacturer was a major presence in motor-racing in the 1970s and 1980s.
These days it is rare to find a Pantera in such original order, and this example will not disappoint lovers of the marque.
