The Mercedes-Benz W111 convertible can be traced back to 1957, when design work began on a replacement of the 2 door Ponton shape.

Production of both the coupe and convertible began in late 1960 utilising the 2.2 M127 engine. In March 1962 the M189 powered 300SE arrived, and in 1965 the 220SE was replaced by the 2.5 litre 250SE. Two years later in 1967 the 220SE replaced by the 280SE, powered by the ‘all new’ 2778cc M130 engine, producing 160bhp - 40hp more than the 220SE. This all new engine could outperform the larger M189 powered 300SE, which signalled the end of the line for the range topping 300SE.

A replacement for the 300SE arrived in the form of the 280SE 3.5, fitted with the M116 V8 engine. This V8 engined car would be the final swansong for this wonderful four seater open cabriolet, a car that would not find a true successor in the Mercedes-Benz range until the W124 Cabriolet arrived in 1991.

About this car:

Coming from an established car collection in the Cotswolds, this car was purchased from John Haines of London, a well established classic Mercedes-Benz retailer. Ten years ago this car was commissioned with John Haines to undergo a complete concourse level restoration, and with credit due to the current keeper, this car looks like the work was done last year!

During the restoration the decision was made to upgrade the 220 engine to the 280 (M130) engine for better performance. The car is in impeccable condition, ready to be displayed at any classic car show. It is beautifully presented and drives ‘on the button’, exactly as a good classic Mercedes-Benz should.

For the last 7 years this car has attended SLSHOP for each annual service, being collected and delivered from the vendors house. There is a well respected file detailing works completed, with Bruce personally having spent around an hour behind the wheel for inspection purposes during each visit.

To build a car of this calibre in today’s money would require an investment well north of £250,000, making the advertised price of this car look like somewhat of an impressive investment.
