1986 924s in great condition Massive history - New MOT For Sale
For sale a 1986 2.5 Porsche 924s in Guards Red
NEW MOT - EXPIRES 30/8/2020
This car is in excellent condition inside and out. I bought it in 2013 from Adrian Crawford of Williams Crawford, the independent Porsche specialist in the West Country. The car has been very lightly used for weekend driving (and to be honest not as much as I thought I would). It’s always been garaged (with dust cover) and SORN every winter to ensure the nasty salt of the Aberdeenshire roads never touches her.
The car has a massive service history including a solicitors letter awarding the car as part of last will and testimony! It also has every MOT certificate issued in the last 25 years (including the very latest one that expires on the 30th August 2020!).
The service history also includes every Porsche service invoice going back to the early 90’s allowing me to piece together a pretty comprehensive ‘life story’ in conjunction with correspondence with Mr Crawford during the purchase process.
It starts first time every time and drives / pulls well for a car of its age with no ‘tell tail’ blue smoke. Oil pressure is good and no garage floor drips. Clutch bites well. There is a slight steering wheel wobble around 70mph. Mileage is approximately 115K. Almost all electrics work although power mirrors are a bit intermittent and it occasionally blows fuse number 8 (indicators) so I’ve invested in a few spares. Rear hatch needs a little help to pop open after the internal switch is pressed and the blower has never worked (hot and cold air controls do work however). Usual cracks on top of dashboard. None of these niggles are MOT failures or even advisories.
I expect it has had a partial respray in the past due to the quality of the paintwork I have no documentation exactly when.
The speedo was changed on the car in 1993 with approximately 58,000 on the clock (documented). It then collected another 51,000 miles during the period till early 2002. At that point it found a resting place in the back of Mr Crawford’s workshops and sat there for the next 10 years. From my recollection he then re-commissioned the car in the summer of 2012 for personal family use. I then purchased the car a year later. The odometer stopped working during storage (apparently a small plastic cog fails)so mileage will be forever 51,579.
I actually bought the car without actually seeing it, and it was delivered (driven) from Cornwall to Aberdeen. I suspect that during 10 years of inactivity the original keys were lost as the ignition barrel does not match the driver’s door and 2 keys are required. I would also say at this point that due to indoor storage during the period of inactivity and subsequently garaging by myself, the car is pretty well rust free with the exception of a very small area of slight bubbling on the drivers side windscreen pillar.
Since I’ve owned the car, the head gasket went in 2014 and required a head skim, new radiator and pipes. This work was performed by Albyn Garage in Aberdeen, a well established garage with an excellent reputation. (large invoice in history) No reoccurrences since. Other work has been done by a family friend who is professional mechanic including servicing, clutch slave cylinder replacement and engine cooling fan replacement (2nd hand 944 one!). I estimate I’ve driven the car around 5,000 miles in the 6 years I’ve owned her, meaning total mileage is around 115K.
I’m selling car as I don’t really drive as much as a should (I’m a motorcyclist also) and personal circumstances mean I’m moving property where I just won’t have the same level of garaging.
June 2018 edition of Modern Classics magazine had a spotlight on the 924s with what to pay guide of £2000 for project, £4000 for usable, £6000 for good and £10,000 for concours. I estimate that £4400 is a very fair price since the car is of good condition, with the exception of the non MOT niggles mentioned already. All the original manuals are present including service book with 13 Porsche dealer stamps! Full service dosser as assembled by Williams Crawford. V5 present.
Various extras included, 924s ‘bits’, dust cover, Haynes manual for both 924 and 944 (for engine and drive train), loads of 924 owners club mags, crook lock etc.
Don’t hesitate to contact me for more information or photographs of specific areas of the car.
My location is Aberdeen city, about a 5mins taxi ride from the station. Why not pop up on the train and do the renowned North 500 before heading home? Just a thought.....
