Built in homage to the successful works specification car ‘BLG 99K’ and the British driver Chris Sclater, whose wins included the Circuit of Ireland and Scottish Rally in 1971.

The car has been detailed to a very high standard, to replicate the original. The coachwork includes vinyl from the 1971 Lombard RAC Rally, and professionally hand sign written livery, which includes team names and slogans. Seats are period Contour high backs (very comfortable) and all instrumentation has been fit in a manner of the era, including Works twin cowl dash (with navigation timing clocks and 6 pot dash), warning lights, foot horn, full rear Works bulkhead tool roll and deep dish steering wheel. The car has a dual hydraulic/cable handbrake. A copy of a sponsor ‘CARS and Car Conversions’ magazine, which was published just before the event is even in a rear pocket. The car has historic spec’ Group 4 genuine Minilite alloys, and tarmac tyres, and Genuine Cibie fog lamps.

Not only does the car look the part but it has been specially prepared by the renowned Bob Dowen Rally Services, to ensure it performs as a works specification car should. The original shell was previously unwelded, requiring no work when purchased nearly 20 years ago (and dry stored since). The car has only 2 previous owners and was in such good condition it even retains its original carpet. The shell has been prepared to historic specification, including steel bubble arches, round rear turrets, a pan hard rod, widened tunnel, rear fire bulkhead, sill stands, strut top and bulkhead strengthening, skids, seam stitched and with a strengthened rear axle and linkages. The shell is of the highest specification, which Bob will vouch and remains unblemished (including underneath). The rear axle was also built by Bob, with a 5.1 diff’, LSD and Atlas internals. The axle also has a strengthening bar, fabricated to match those of the Works cars.

The engine is a short stroke 1600 HOLBAY crossflow, believed to come from a Brabham of the era, mounted in a World Cup Cross Member. It remains unraced since built but it has been road and track tested, including Rally Day events, where the car was very well received. It has the original Holbay dry sump, and black braided oil lines run through the car to the oil tank in the boot, that sits with the mid mounted foam filled aluminium fuel tank and dual fuel pumps. Holbay race head, cam and Vernier Duplex timing gears. The engine is running on Webber twin 45s, which have been choked down for maximum torque, and coupled with the custom Maniflow manifold and exhaust the car comfortably revs to 9k. Maximum power at 7.5k revs was 135bhp but drivability was the goal on the dyno. The engine was built by boss Jamie of JB Race Engines, a former employee of Anderson Race Engines.

The gearbox is a freshly built straight cut 4 speed ‘rocket box’ with short shift. It has an aluminium RS2000 bellhousing a Titan aluminium housed clutch.

The car has tarmac specification Bilstein adjustable suspension from West Wales Rally Spares, giving a tremendous amount of feel when coupled with the quick rack, double width roll bar and perfect geometry set up of the strengthened works shell (set up also by Bob Dowen). Windows are laminated with safety film and kill pull switches and extinguishers (4.0 Lifeline) plumbed in, to regulation (including engine bay). The car has OMP belts and a full 6 point Safety Devices cage.

The car is in period trim, ideal for tours, as a weekend racer or simply an investment, but with the purchase of in date seats and belts, it can easily be given an MSA logbook. I can assist with this. There are several historic sprints / rallies that this car could also be made eligible for (pre 1975). The car was made with this in mind, as I originally intended to rally the car. I now race another lesser car.
This car was meticulously built, with no expense spared, by a Ford rally enthusiast over a number of years. It is fantastic to drive. You will not find a better prepared historic specification Ford Escort Mk1.
