1966 Mercedes-Benz 280SE Cabriolet (W211) #2122 For Sale
The Mercedes-Benz W111 convertible can be traced back to 1957, when design work began on a replacement of the 2 door Ponton shape.
Production of both the coupe and convertible began in late 1960 utilising the 2.2 M127 engine. In March 1962 the M189 powered 300SE arrived, and in 1965 the 220SE was replaced by the 2.5 litre 250SE. Two years later in 1967 the 220SE replaced by the 280SE, powered by the ‘all new’ 2778cc M130 engine, producing 160bhp – 40hp more than the 220SE. This all new engine could outperform the larger M189 powered 300SE, which signalled the end of the line for the range topping 300SE.
A replacement for the 300SE arrived in the form of the 280SE 3.5, fitted with the M116 V8 engine.
The epitome of 1960s glamour and a status symbol for all time.
This particular 220SE hides an alluring secret… Power comes not from the original 2.2 litre 95bhp M127 engine but from a later, more powerful, more fuel efficient M130 2778cc engine usually found in the later 280SE.
