Lot 165 - A 1955 Vincent Black Prince Series D, registration number SXA 919, frame number RD 13021, engine number F10 AB/2B/11121, crankcase number K28V, black. Philip Vincent believed in engineering excellence providing superlative high performance and with continued development he would achieve his goal to create the ultimate gentleman’s motorcycle. The Series D fully enclosed Black Knight (Rapide spec) and Black Prince (Shadow spec) models had problems from the off due to delays in delivery of the glassfibre panels which severely hampered production, ultimately leading to only approximately 200 fully enclosed machines leaving the factory. This Black Knight is the 13th from last motorcycle manufactured by Vincent, being assembled in December 1955. The machine was dispatched to its first owner a PG Jenkins through Conway’s, Shepherds Bush, London and was registered in May 1956. PG Jenkins retained the bike for two years before trading it for a van to be used in a new business venture. The subsequent owners are recorded between 1962-1998 when our vendor acquired the motorcycle. RD 13021 has history confirming its matching numbers and is a well known machine within Vincent circles having won several national concours awards with the Vincent Owners Club and featuring in The Classic Motorcycle (Aug 1991). During our vendors thirty years of custodianship, the Vincent has been used to attend numerous VOC events at home and abroad. In 2003 the engine top end was overhauled to overcome an oiling problem. The cylinders were re-bored +20 thou, new pistons were installed and the heads were refurbished with unleaded seals and captive rocket assemblies. Our vendor has made further improvements for 21st century road conditions, updating the front brake with twin shoes, adding an electric start, alternator driven 12volt electrics and twin colour coordinated detachable panniers. Our vendor who has owned Vincent’s since 1959 has reluctantly taken the decision to part with this motorcycle because with advancing age he is not exercising the machine sufficiently. The motorcycle will be offered for auction with a history file and offers an opportunity to purchase a highly desirable and collectable machine. V5C, MOT and tax exempt
