1938 Series 1 4/4 ultra rare 4 seater Flat Rad For Sale
Restored in the 1980's a very rare pre-war 4 seater 4/4. Only a tiny number of 4 seaters were made before production shut down for the duration. Further work in my ownership was carried out in 2014:- Coventry Climax engine that was fully rebuilt with new white-metalled bottom end, new pistons, valves and rocker shafts, rebuilt dynamo and starter. Has covered about 3000 miles since including 575 miles in one weekend without missing a beat. Good oil pressure hot or cold. Exhaust could do with replacing as I had to make a temporary repair to a crack in the downpipe after the Lands End Trial and , er, it's still got the temporary repair! Radiator rebuilt with a new core, cooling system has a small electric pump to assist the thermosyphon. Rewired with a new loom, dynamo still runs three brush, headlights still have mechanical dipping mechanism and worked perfectly when I drove through the night on the 2017 Lands End Trial. Indicators have been fitted into the side lights and rear lights with a period switch on the dash. Wiring for the driving lamp is fitted but I missed going to the Beaulieu Autojumble to see if I could find a lamp :( All the dash instruments work, even the clock bursts into life when the car is driven (tends to stop overnight!) Has two diving helmet dash lamps that work. Wiper motor was cleaned and works. Original Meadows gear box with the continental gear change pattern, good synchromesh on 3rd and top. Clutch and the coupling shaft were replaced in 2014. Prop shaft was rebuilt with new UJ's, original Moss rear axle fitted. Girling mechanical brakes all round with new shoes and skimmed drums, the brakes are effective and the car pulls up with no pulling to one side. Structurally it is good with a nice chassis, no rot in the ash frame and the body panels are good. Interior is in good usable condition with full carpet set. Paintwork is 35 years old and patinated, make that well patinated! Personally I love old cars that look like they have been used and wear their history on their bodywork, there's a story to every mark and every scratch. If you are looking for a super shiny museum piece then don't bother getting in touch, if you love and appreciate history and want some memorable adventures then I am sure you will love it! This is a well sorted 80 year old sports car that is good to drive (unlike a lot of small pre-war sports cars that were little more than rebodied saloons) it is at home on A and B roads sitting at 50mph but also copes well with modern traffic. It is eligible for the Post Vintage Thoroughbred class of the VSCC so able to take part in a wide range of VSCC events. As I said, if you after a spit and polish concours example for your museum don't bother wasting my time, or if you expect to come along and suck air through your teeth to justify an insulting offer then , again, don't bother. BUT if you are up for an adventure and appreciate what this game 80 year old girl is then please get in touch. Car is located in Gloucester.
