1989 Escort XR3i Cabriolet big history, lots new parts! For Sale
Owned 6 years, previous owner 13 years, my XR3i is a strong contender for the desirable Cabriolet variant of the iconic Escort XR3i.
Fastidiously maintained: regular fluids and oil/filter changes, new dampers, new brake shoes/pads, new battery, new front indicator units and side repeaters, ignition overhaul (new distributor cap /oil seal /rotor / spark plugs / leads, etc).
Professional invoiced garage work: top-end engine rebuild, with new replacement camshaft, hydraulic lifters and valve stem oil seals (by local engineers), a new mohair electric hood and cable tension set (fitted by Aldridge Trimmers as featured on T.V. Car S.O.S), original 14” Cosworth Lattice alloys professionally refinished and retaining all "89" Ford casting marks. New tyres fitted and are as new. Replacements of Timing Belt & tensioner (Gates), complete coolant system overhaul fitting new radiator, water pump, thermostat, fuel & temperature gauges. Replacement standard exhaust and a brand new oil sump pan & gasket (all fitted by classic car specialists).
Rare to be original after 30 years; the only exceptions are Recaro front seats (from the RS Turbo model - took 4 years to source an excellent matching pair) and a Sony CD player.
Options: extra hood cover (no rips or missing poppers), a genuine boot spoiler (RS Ford dealer stamped) and the electrically operated roof. Factory original features eg. working electric windows, unused cigarette lighter, stamped body panels, working LED roof clock, Carello headlights, audio speakers and all the glass, including the heated front screen (though works intermittently).
It comes with an unused spare key set and fully working Thatcham approved Vecta security, with accompanying spare tags, manuals and the original Certificate of Installation.
Service History: Very comprehensive and a main attraction when I purchased it - meticulously details all maintenance and service work to which I have added; rare these days to see this owner documentation carefully passed on; invoices and receipts covering an impressive 22 years, lots of Ford main dealer invoices (which include new Transaxle assembly and Clutch), and also includes all the MOT certificates; these suggest Speedo was changed in 2003 at 71000, so mileage = 91675
Overall: not concours (hence the price), but a very presentable and fully useable example of a modern classic that drives reliably without issue; it has been looked after by professional mechanics and it shows - starts first time with no rattles, engine tapping or exhaust smoke. Always a talking point at petrol stops. It was very hard to find a genuine XR3 with all its paperwork but, as I have driven just 43 miles in last 18 months, after 6 years, it is time to let another owner enjoy some memories!
