1931 Ariel MF31, 350cc, Very Rare, Running For Sale
1 of only 5 surviving Ariel MF31's.
1931 Ariel 346cc Model MF31
Frame no. J2042
Engine no. A044A
Ariel's range for 1931 encompassed a dazzling variety of models: vertical engines, sloping engines, sidevalves, overhead valves - two or four per cylinder - all were represented along with Edward Turner's revolutionary Square Four.
Based on the existing 250, the 350cc MF31 'Sloper' joined the range in the spring of 1931.
Like that of its fellows, the newcomer's overhead-valve engine was inclined at 30 degrees from the horizontal, conveying the benefits of better cooling, greater accessibility and a lowered centre of gravity for improved handling.
Sadly, the model lasted for just two seasons, the economic recession and Ariel's own sorry financial plight seeing the range slimmed down at the Slopers' expense for 1933.
According to Roy Pointing in "The Classic Motorcycle Februari 2003" only 761 MF31's were produced and as far as the Ariel Club is aware only 5 have survived.
This ultra-rare Ariel MF31 twin-port has a completely rebuild engine by specialist Rob Schol, who is well known for his immaculate work on Ariels.
The Ariel runs, shifts gear and brakes.
It is rideable.
But the rolling chassis will require further re-commissioning.
The machine is offered with Bills of the engine rebuild totalling more than 1000 pounds.
It is complete, the missing dynamo on the picture is included and working.
Bronze carburettor, levers etc. are all original.
This rare Ariel MF31 comes without documents, but according to Ariel specialist it is correct for 1931.
In my research I have found out the build date to be around June 1931.
