1972 Lamborghini Espada Series II – 3.9L V12

Chassis No. 8501

Engine No. 40690

This UK registered example is one of a total of 1217 Lamborghini Espadas that were built during the period 1968-1978, making it the most successful Lamborghini model until the expansion of Countach production in the mid-1980s. During the 10 years of production, few changes were made to the exterior design although changes were made to the interior, notably the introduction of a wood veneered dashboard. Of the three series, the II had the highest power output generating 345 BHP. With a claimed acceleration 0-62 mph of 6.9 seconds, it boasted a top speed of 155 mph. A total of 575 Series II’s were manufactured from 1970-72, of which a mere 58 were in RHD form, thus the rarity of this example.

The Espada was a 2+2 coupe and this particular car spent some time in Pietermaritzburg, Kwa-Zulu Natal in the early 1980’s under registration number NP4286 before being sold to a representative of Burchmores Auctioneers in Johannesburg, South Africa, On the 29th July 1985 (34 years ago) the car was sold at auction to a Mr. A.P. Van Der Merwe for the princely sum of R 23000 (£11500 at that time).

For reasons unknown, on the 3rd September 1986 the car was again sold to Mr. Nolly (Emanuel) Limberis for R16000 (£8000 at that time). The registration number was LDC062T, the T denoting the old Transvaal province of South Africa.

Licence receipts for every year subsequent have been retained, as has much ancillary documentation and workshop invoices.

With failing health, in July 2018 “Nolly” reluctantly sold the car to a classic car exporter after enjoying 32 years of pleasurable motoring in the rarefied and dry climate of the Transvaal high veldt. The Espada arrived in London Gateway on the Santa Barbara container vessel on the 12th April 2019. Sadly “Nolly” recently passed away.

Largely unmolested and sound although in need of some attention, this iconic classic supercar is offered for sale as it runs or Cotswold Classic Car Restorations would welcome the opportunity to indulge in selected, sympathetic refurbishment and upgrades and even a nut & bolt restoration should the purchaser so desire.

The Espada is of monocoque construction with a steel body. Suspension is fully independent, with double wishbones, coil springs, hydraulic shock absorbers and anti-roll bars with four wheel disc brakes. Twin fuel tanks, gravity linked, hold 95 L of petrol with the fuel caps hidden behind black cosmetic grills in the C-pillars, one of Gandini's signature touches.

Its 3,929 cc (240 cu in) V12 engine breathes through six Weber side-draft carburettors and there are 24 valves commanded by two chain-driven overhead camshafts per bank. The gearbox is mounted in block with the engine and the transmission is manual.
