1967 Mercedes-Benz 250SL Pagoda - SOLD, Another Wanted!! For Sale
It should perhaps not be a surprise that here we are rather fond of 250SL’s, combining the best of the earlier 230SL’s and the best of the later 280SL’s with a rarity that neither can match. The 250SL’s feature many of the prettier and more extravagant exterior and interior details, including the painted wheels with two-piece hubcaps. Inside, chrome door locks and the rear view mirrors were replaced by a cheaper plastic alternative. Mechanically, on the face of it, the 250’s are near identical to later 280’s except for 300cc, with a smoother 7 main bearing engine and four wheel disc brakes.
This European delivery 250SL was first supplied new to Switzerland before being exported to the USA. Finished in Dark Blue with rare factory Pale Blue/Grey leather interior, it comes in the perfect and desirable spec of an automatic gearbox with power steering.
The paintwork of the car in great condition all over with no major marks to speak of. The chromework is generally in great condition, although there are a number of small marks, as one would expect with a car that has been used and enjoyed over a number of years. The car has its matching hardtop with is in great condition with its original headlining and leather trim. The Blue soft top is as new, in line with data card, and fits beautifully.
The interior of the car is wonderfully original with the car’s factory leather interior still fitted. It was reconnolised in 2015 and still presents beautifully today. The carpets are the correct two-tone square weave pattern in pale blue, which are unmarked and look stunning. The woodwork is in great condition and the interior features the correct narrow face early style radio. Being a European delivery car, the speedometer reads in km/h and the car has covered just 136,000 kilometers, or around 84,000 miles.
Under the bonnet the car presents in an unrestored condition with the factory priming run marks still present on the underside of the bonnet. In the boot the car has its original boot mat, with its spare wheel cover with a new matching Michelin MXV-P spare tyre. Nestled inside the spare wheel is the original tool kit complete with tools, some still in the original wrapping! The underside of the boot still has its factory priming run marks and the original tyre pressure sticker, in French.
Although lacking its early history, this car appears to have been very well cared for in all respects. We have service records going back to 2001 showing that it lived on the US East coast until sold by respected classic car dealer Matt de Garmo in 2005 to an attorney in California. After eight years ownership, it then was trucked back to the East coast and returned to the same dealer to be resold.
Purchased by Silver Arrows Automobiles in 2013, it then came back to Europe. Maintained in the UK by Roger Edwards, since when it has only done 1000 miles, the car is in great mechanical condition. Recent works carried out include fitment of Michelin MXV-P tyres, special hidden inertia-reel seat belts, new body seals and obviously servicing as necessary. Having covered nearly 250 miles in the week since we've had it back, we can report that it drives absolutely beautifully, in fact, it is perhaps one of the best driving we’ve had!
This is a wonderful and very useable left hand drive car in great condition and in a stunning colour scheme. The car has a delightful history file going back nearly twenty years, with the original handbook and factory data card. When sold by Matt de Garmo in 2005, he described it as one of the sweetest SL’s we’ve ever had, the same is true today!
The rather appropriate number plate LIL (little) 250 will stay with the car if it remains in the UK.
