For many, Blueblack with Mushroom Leather is the perfect colour combination for this era of Mercedes-Benz and this 60,000-mile 260E is indeed one seriously classy looking vehicle. In excellent condition, with negligible mileage and a thorough service record; examples of this standard seldom come around.

In addition to the excellent colour combination, this car was generously optioned from new with leather interior, power adjustable driver and passenger seats, cruise control, air conditioning and 15-hole light alloy wheels and Mercedes-Benz mud-flaps front and back on top of the standard upgrades of the six-cylinder model. These being: 4x power windows, power slide/tilt sunroof, headlamp wash/wipe, retractable rear headrests and front centre armrest.

The bodywork on this first generation W124 is in exceptional condition, with no rust and only extremely minimal marks to the paintwork. The exposed sills are in perfect original condition and have never required repair. Other typical areas of W124 corrosion such as the front inner wings are factory fresh. The condition of the underside and running gear are equally fresh, it has never needed any welding work and aside from a cracked coil spring and a ball joint dust cover, its MOT record is unblemished.

Inside is a reminder of just why Mercedes-Benz used the phrase “Engineered Like No Other Car in the World” as their advertising slogan during this period. The leather is of the finest quality and could only be matched these days by a Bentley or Rolls Royce. Certainly, the rubber fitted by MB, BMW or Audi wouldn’t come close. It has almost no wear to the driver or passenger seats and the rear bench looks to have hardly been used. The carpets are unmarked and have been protected by MB Ribbed over-mats, the dash is free of cracks and the Zebrano wood trim has a very nice even shine. The only reasonably modern addition is an Alpine CD radio, with a 6 CD Changer in the boot, which is quite a nice touch but could easily be swapped out for something more period if the new owner wishes.

On the road, the shorter stroke 2.6 litre M103 engine is delightful to use. It is sweetly free revving, adequately powerful and makes a really smooth 6-cylinder engine note. An average of 30mpg is easily achievable with mixed careful diving. The 15 Hole wheels have been freshly powder coated and are shod with nearly new Avon tyres.

Prior to sale, the car has been thoroughly serviced, including engine oil and filter, 6x spark plugs, automatic transmission fluid and filter, fresh brake fluid, coolant flush and thermostat, new auxiliary belt, a new quality battery, 2 new front ball joints, rear brake pads, a new bonnet lining and a new sump gasket which had a minor leak. It has also been machine polished, waxed, had the wheels powder coated and the leather has been treated with Gliptone (so it smells fabulous). It has an MOT with no advisories until 27thMay 2020.

The document file for this car is pretty comprehensive, with a fully stamped up service book, and many other supporting invoices for work carried out in the past. It also has all of its original manauls and even the little instruction card which hung over the cruise control stalk when it was new housed in the “London Road Garage” supplying dealer leather wallet. I should also note, their dealer plates and keyring are also still present, which should make those as nerdy as me very happy!

Early W124s this nice are just about as good as it gets, in my opinion, and whether you’re looking for a nice weekend classic to take to shows, a comfy classy saloon to use every day or another Mercedes to add to your collection, I’m certain that this car will meet all of your expectations. Please call if you require any more information or to arrange viewing. More HD Photos can be found at the link below. Part Exchange Considered.
