1979 MG MGB - a lovely ‘B’ Roadster SOLD

Think of brand 'MG' and most people will conjure a picture in their mind of the quintessential sports car of the 60/70's, the MGB. A two-door sports car manufactured by BMC (British Motor Corporation) and later BL (British Leyland), the MGB featured a four-cylinder, 1800cc derivative of the 'B' series engine, mated to a 4 speed manual gearbox with later cars featuring a Laylock overdrive, which engaged on 3rd / 4th gear (year of manufacture dependent) and came in two body styles, initially the open-top Roadster (from 1963) and the fixed-head Coupe 'GT' (built 1965 onwards) with both models staying in production until 1980. Making better use of space, the MGB offered its passengers more interior / luggage accommodation than the MGA (which it replaced) whilst also being 3 inches shorter and with its softer suspension, offering a smoother ride and larger engine (two other derivatives the MGC and MGB GT V8 would also feature a 3 litre straight six and 3.5 litre V8 respectively) the MGB proved hugely popular, the US export market especially, and over its 18 year production cycle, in excess of 500,000 cars were sold worldwide.

First registered in May '79, this wonderful MGB Roadster is finished her original Black, is fitted with the venerable 1800cc 'B' series engine, mated to a 4 speed overdrive gearbox and benefits from having a full leather interior finished in black, 'new' 15" Minilte style alloy wheels and looks fantastic with her chrome bumper conversion. A review of her comprehensive history file indicates that the car has been well maintained, invoices for circa £6.5k for maintenance alone, and confirms that she has driven less than 5k miles in the last 10yrs.

Walking around the car, invoices for a further £10k restoration in 2001 support this, we're delighted to say that the bodywork remains in very good condition (save for a few insignificant marks), the panel gaps are all excellent, the black paint polishes beautifully to a deep shine and the chrome / lens / glass / rubbers etc all remain in excellent condition too and with the recent addition of a brand new set of 15" Minilite style wheels, with diamond cut edges, new 'MG' crested centre caps and tyres this great looking MGB Roadster really stands out from the crowd.

The lovely quality feel extends to the interior too. Open the door and you're meet with polished 'MG' sill guards, a Moto-lita leather bound steering wheel, 'MG' crested over-mats, inertia-reel seatbelts, upgraded black leather seats in fantastic condition, a Bluetooth enabled DAB Radio installation and the eagle-eyed will have spotted that the car also comes with a specialist supplied full roll-over areo hoop for added safety (easily removable for those wanting full classic 'B' Roadster lines). We're also happy to confirm that the folding soft-top is in excellent order, free from any scuffs / wear marks and on opening the boot the owner will find a full tool-kit, carpeted cargo area with this also covering the spare wheel too.

Mechanically the car is in first class order. Well maintained and used sparingly this Roadster was fitted with a reconditioned, lead-free Ivor Searle engine @ 74k miles, she benefits from a rebuilt over-drive unit and has also been fitted with an electronic ignition upgrade and with the car now showing ~78k miles we couldn't help but smile when we took her for a routine test-drive, she has light positive steering, brakes well, corners nice and flat and although we can't evidence it we have a feeling she may have benefited from the odd performance upgrade as the Roadster is no sedentary 70's classic.

Universally available, but so often in poor states of repair or having been subject to 'patchwork' restorations finding a nice MGB isn't as straight forward as one might think. Well prepared and cherished, this MGB Roadster is a lovely example, not an outright show car (these are £15-20k+ with prices increasingly still), but a fabulously maintained and well sorted example and knowing that she has previously been subject to a quality restoration and done less than 15k miles since, she offers an enthusiast a great way into classic MG ownership and one that can be enjoyed on a daily basis too.
