Bentley T1 1968

Chippendale dash model finished in Garnet with light grey hide and fine gold coach lines.

(Garnet is the same colour as the Queen’s Phantom and Wraith. It is a solid black cherry colour, very similar to Aston Martin Royal Cherry. Many of the royal state coaches are also painted in Garnet.)

Tax exempt. (Historic classification.)

Mot exempt. (Although current mot with no advisories.)

Grey lambs wool over rugs and foot rests, with grey carpets bound in grey leather. The leather has a nice aged patina.

The car is fitted with the more elegant and sought after Chippendale dash and rear picnic tables. The front and rear screen dress wood is also superb. (This usually suffers from sun damage.)

Rear inertia reel seat belts fitted. These are easily removed as the fixings are factory pre drilled. All original factory blanking caps and bolts retained.

Excellent chrome bumpers and bright work.

This car has the benefit of being fitted with the smoother and more modern GM400 three speed auto gear box, as opposed to the earlier four speed hydromatic found in the Silver Cloud series.

Twin matching door mirrors, making the car easier and safer to drive in modern traffic.

Correct current style Avon Turbosteel tyres fitted (as detailed on the original warranty) with excellent tread. Front tyres brand new.

Fully functioning ice cold air conditioning system with the large Delco air compressor. The system has been re-gassed and overhauled by a refrigeration engineer who understands theses older systems.

Both small tool kit and jack and wheel brace bag retained in the boot. The feeler gauges are still wrapped in their original paper within the tool kit. There is also the correct Allen key for removing the flying B mascot. New boot carpet fitted in 1996.

Three master keys with two correct period Bentley tear drop rubber key rings. (These were designed so as to not the damage the wood work on the Chippendale dash when the key is in the ignition panel.)

Only 77K miles in 52 years, backed up by numerous invoices and mot’s. Invoices present from noted RR&B Specialist Association members such as P&A Wood and Stratton RR&Bentley confirming that the car has been in good hands over the years. Looked after by Silver Lady in Brentwood during my ownership.

Regarding previous ownership, having studied the history file, it seems that the first owner, a London company, had the car for 9 years from 1968-1977. The second owner from 1977-1987. The third from 1987-1988. The forth from 1988-1989, and then the fifth for 28 years from 1989-2017. (There is a period of inactivity from 2005 when MOT’s stop, together with a SORN request, suggesting that the car was more than likely stored off road from 2005 to 2017, when the MOT history begins again, further supporting the mileage.) The sixth owner had the car from 2017-2019. I took ownership of the car in May 2019. The V5 shows me and 5 previous keepers, although the DVLA history papers in the file suggest that they missed off the original owner listed on the factory warranty, the London company, who took delivery from Jack Barclay, Mayfair in 1968.

The brake and hydraulic fluid has just been changed. Bilstein shock absorbers fitted replacing the inferior original Girlings. The stance of the car is correct and the sight glasses of the hydraulic reservoir are clear with the correct levels displayed. The all important brake pressure warning lights do not come on, even on cold start up.

All fluid levels are correct. Oil and filter Just changed, having now been done twice during my ownership. New spark plugs fitted when I first bought it. Coolant flush with new anti-freeze. New HT leads (genuine Crewe) and carbs serviced including new needles and jets. It starts when hot and cold in summer and winter. 300 + mile trip in summer, complete with traffic jam and no overheating.

Owners manual with the vehicle details and colours/chassis/key number etc listed on the inside cover.

The factory Warranty is present, detailing the car specifications which is still retained today, being supplied by Jack Barclay when new.

The car retains the nice original chrome finish period radio unit, which is also depicted in the owners manual as standard equipment.

There is also an original sales brochure featuring the T1, Giving all dimensions and colour options etc, printed in 1965.

Bentley T1’s are rare cars. My car has a nice integrity to it and feels very balanced all round. There are nice original details, such as the original spare fuse wire and metal pull out fuse diagram being still present in the fuse box, together with the feeler gauges still wrapped in their grease proof paper in the tool kit.

With it’s mileage, tasteful colour, the Chippendale dash and the GM400 gear box, not only make this car rarer still, but also considerably more desirable when compared to other configurations available during this period. It’s styling is firmly rooted in the 1960’s. A beautiful, regal car, an entirely different character to the equivalent Rolls Royce.

It is a surprisingly practical car to own with everyday turn key usability, but most importantly, it is appreciating in value.

£22,950.
