Elderly engineer/restorer/enthusiast has regretfully decided that it is time to seriously reduce my large collection, (simply too many to fully enjoy anymore). I am also under pressure from my wife as she does not want the job of disposal when I die!
All my machines have been restored by me, for me, using other skilled professionals for jobs I am not expert in (e.g. paintwork/plating etc. (not a cosmetic cover up to sell) It follows that I have been fastidious in getting things right so that they not only look right, but more importantly, work correctly as I do not restore to just look at, they are restored to drive and enjoy!
Fully nut and bolt restored in 1998,
this 1955 car is from the first year of production and is one of few that made it to the UK in that year. It is a matching number car in it's original colours and has it's original De Luxe features of two tone paint, clock (working), additional alloy trim, heater and special interior trim. Being a very early and rare car, it has a number of parts from the earlier 175 cars and these are all correct (though some were difficult to find as originality was a requirement above all.
Since restoration, the car has covered over 38,000 very enjoyable miles in my ownership and never let me down (though it has received regular servicing and routine replacements like tyres, brake linings, clutch, starter brushes piston rings etc. (for many years it was annually driven to different parts of Germany for their National Rally and several other European Countries as well as many corners of the UK.
As a result, I have subsequently replaced the original drivers seat to provide the comfort that allows 8 hours continuous daily driving though the original restored seat is included and can be replaced with no engineering. Also, for safety, the single rear wheel has been replaced with a stronger one and a more substantial tyre (though again the original can be replaced and is also included). Whilst I was in Regansburg in 1999, I met Fritz Fend who designed the Messerschmitt so he signed the car for me (see dashboard pic).
The trailer has it's origins in an eastern block country but I modified it as a bit of fun and made a towbar to tow it, It can be removed easily when not required.
The car still performs as it has always done due to regular replacement of any wearing parts and whilst still a well cared for real head turner, has some minor cosmetic imperfections though it would not be difficult to return to pristine.
Lots of history, all of it good!
This car is a well known and very special!Extensive history
