There’s nothing quite like a chrome bumper MGB Roadster. They are the perfect mix between the sleek, stylish design of the much earlier cars, coupled with the refinements - 5 bearing engine, better hood design, etc, making it the ultimate driver’s MGB. These cars are a fantastic investment, with prices continually rising. Being both Tax and MOT exempt, owning these cars is very affordable, along with cheap insurance – what’s not to like!
This car is no exception, and I feel you’ll struggle to find a better one in this price bracket. No, it’s not a show car, but presents really nicely, and if you’re after a solid, reliable MGB to use that won’t deteriorate quickly, then this is most probably the one for you!
I purchased the car from its last long-term owner (nearly 30 years!). The last owner had the car professionally stripped and painted shortly after buying it, and has only covered around 10,000 miles since. Over the years, the car has had anything it’s needed – recently it’s had a replacement SU fuel pump, new batteries, replacement of all the ignition components – the list goes on.
Bodily, the car is nice and straight, the respray was done professionally and has lasted very well. Obviously, after 30 years, there are a few areas with minor imperfections and small amounts of bubbling, but the car presents very well indeed, as you can see in the pictures! In my opinion, it is much better than buying a car that’s been painted very recently, as there could be all sorts of horrors hiding underneath the fresh paintwork. The panelwork is solid and straight, the gaps are very good and the doors shut with a satisfying ‘clunk’. The brightwork is all in good order. The wire wheels don’t clunk when taking up load, but could do with re-powdercoating if you’re fussy – but you can see that they still look very presentable in the pictures – I’m just fussy!
The interior is also clean and tidy – but again, not brand new! The seats look to be the originals, and are in good order with only a minor tear on the driver’s bolster. A nice wood-rimmed Moto Lita steering wheel has been fitted which completes the look. The hood and frame is in good order, it’s nice and taut. The rear window isn’t faded or cracked like so many are. A half tonneau is also included in the sale.
The engine starts readily and runs well, ticking over at around 750rpm, just as it should. I drove the car back 100 miles from purchasing, and it drives just as an MGB should! Oil pressure is excellent and there are no overheating problems – a Kenlowe fan has also been fitted. The 4-synchro non-overdrive gearbox selects gears nicely without fuss. I have retuned and rebalanced the carburettors, reset the ignition timing etc, and the car starts easily when cold and hot.
You can see in the pictures that the engine bay is tidy (and, body colour – it was repainted at the time of the restoration) - it could be detailed further to look very nice indeed. Exhaust note is great and the car pulls and drives as it should.
I have MOTs dating back 25 years along with lots of old tax discs, and of course the current V5 document.
All in all, this is an absolutely stunning little car that is absolutely ready to be used and enjoyed. You won’t find many cars at this price that have been finished to this standard. I travel all over the country to view these cars and this one is particularly good for the money I’m asking. If you’re looking for a show-standard car, please double your budget and look elsewhere, but if you’re looking for a nice, tidy, usable car that you can enjoy and improve as you go, then this is probably the car for you!
