1970 Porsche 914/6 - From the collection of Guy Berryman For Sale
The 914 was supplied mainly with a flat four engine from VW but was also produced in small numbers with a 2.0L flat six by Porsche, indeed all the six cylinder cars were built by Porsche at the main plant in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen
The 914/6 was homologated by the FIA for Group 4 Competition, Special Grand Touring cars, and these became known as the 914/6 GT which were actively campaigned throughout the 1970s in Europe and became very popular in the USA at SCCA events in the period
This 914/6 was constructed at Stuttgart on 6th March 1970 finished in Signal Orange with Black leatherette and options included a Blaupunkt Frankfurt Radio and coloured windows. Born as a six cylinder car, Porsche USA is noted as the selling Porsche centre on the Certificate of Authenticity
In late 1970, the 914/6 was acquired by hugely respected Porsche technical expert and development engineer Grady Clay of Rennenhaus fame, who acquired the car for $900!! Notes on file from Mr Clay talk about his memories of the car:
‘Someone had tried to put 910 cams in the 2.0T engine. When they cranked it, it broke all the rockers from the high lift valves hitting the pistons. I bought the car with the engine in place but pistons hanging out of the case. With the 2.2T engine, it was a screamer (relatively speaking). I drove it for about a year and sold it well prepared for $6500 to a kid in Vail. Here it is circa Feb. 1971. (Note the ’69 911S Targa.) About a year later he came down from the mountains and sold it back to me for $500. Only a little worse for the wear repainted blue and a primer passenger door and now about 23K miles’
Further notes from Mr Clay to the vendor prior to his purchase explain the images of the car on the ice: ‘Here it is at a RMR PCA Icekana on Georgetown Reservoir in about ’75. (the tires are XWX with 198 3/8 “ bolts each). I still have it with 43K mi. It will live on as a really nice street hot-rod Porsche street car. Even Professor Earnst Furmann drove it, validating the Porsche KG nameplate’
‘Cruising along at 3500, you can seriously surprise people – either a passenger or another car. It is a very comfortable street car and with only Goodyear race tires an outstanding track car. I can tell some fun stories. I first bought this 914-6 in late ’70 and it has never crashed or rusted. The body is as delivered but painted once (color change) in about ‘73. It is a crummy dark blue with a primer passenger door and with the original Signal Orange showing in many places on the outside. Fortunately, the trunks were not painted. It was my PCA DE ‘mule’ (prior to Club Racing) while I seriously raced another 914-6.’
Acquired by Guy Berryman of rock band Coldplay in July 2016, the 914/6 was shipped to the UK where a comprehensive restoration program was completed to an extremely high standard by Porsche expert Glenn Moule Enterprises. The body was totally restored and preserved where possible, re-painted in Blue and the interior was also restored with fresh carpets, GT bucket seats. The original 914/6 GT steering wheel complemented by the gorgeous 10,000 RPM Tachometer was previously fitted by Clay during his ownership
We first encountered this car on the 2018 Tour Auto and had the pleasure of spending the week trying to keep up with Guy and Glenn in the agile Porsche as we hustled our 1962 Jaguar 3.8 Mk2 after them! The 914/6 performed admirably on the event and we really enjoyed watching the car slice through the French countryside with that glorious six cylinder howl coming from its exhaust
Following the successful completion of the Tour Auto, the engine was stripped in May 2019 and completely rebuilt by Glenn Moule Enterprises and the gearbox fully rebuilt, the specification is listed below
The engine is a 2.5L (2.2 magnesium crank case), original 66mm weighted crankshaft, 85mm JE pistons and barrels (9.8:1), ‘S’ camshafts, new flywheel & clutch and the carburettors are Weber 40IDA 3C (fully rebuilt). The gearbox was rebuilt at the same time by marque specialist Tuthill and an LSD is fitted with four friction faces. Interested parties should note the engine is still running in
Rarely do original 914/6 models come to market and especially examples like this that have such illustrious ownership history. Grady Clay and his team Rennenhaus play a significant part in Porsche history and we are honoured to have been selected as agent by Mr Berryman to represent the sale of this car from his private car collection. Without doubt one of the finest and well sorted 914/6 models extant supplied with comprehensive restoration invoices and UK registration
