1978 A German Spitfire ! SOLD

A full nut and bolt Triumph (German) Spitfire 1500 restoration

Price: €19, 895 Year: 1978 Kilometers: 77, 963

HISTORY FILE – A genuine “German Spitfire” – if ever there was such a thing! Heritage Trust have confirmed that our delightful restored example was built specifically for the German market and left the factory in late 1977, but was not registered until the 1st of July 1978. The comprehensive German registration document (Fahrzeugbrief) shows several owners all the way back to 1990 until the car is de-registered in May 2001. This would be the start of slow but thorough frame restoration by a keen private restorer that would culminate with the car being sold in 2016 restored but, still to be assembled. The project would be finished by an incredibly meticulous British car fan (known to Cathedral Classics) and precise restorer. The pictures speak for themselves with literally every nut and bolt changed to an exacting standard. Added to a full engine rebuild, the car is now ready to be enjoyed once again. Cathedral Classics are delighted to bring this little gem to the market place and look forward to ensuring that it finds the right home.

EXTERIOR - The alluring Michelotti design of this Triumph Spitfire 1500 is adorable and fulfils the ‘iconic British sports car’ ideal perfectly. Finished in the ubiquitous industry standard RAL 9010 white, it suits the classic Triumph lines beautifully. The folding vinyl soft top and rear tonneau cover are fully intact and the plastic rear screen sections are clear and damage free. The frame off restoration is completed with a real bonus in the shape of a factory delivered hardtop which has recently received all new rubber seals and trim. A fantastic Autumn and Winter alternative that turns the car into a sweet little coupe.

INTERIOR – The restored interior is an absolute joy. The seats remain trimmed in original PVC and are in excellent order with no damage and light wear only, and the new matching door cards are trimmed with appropriately sized small foot protectors to avoid scuff marks when entering the snug interior. The zipped rear window offers a quick fresh air alternative to a complete top down. In keeping with the exterior restoration, new interior items include: the newly fitted wood veneered instrument panel; new carpets and fittings; new inertia reel seatbelts and receivers. The period Sanyo radio-cassette is another pleaser. A beautifully restored British classic, just bursting to be driven and enjoyed.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION – Without question, the highlight of this complete restoration example is under the bonnet. The standard 1493cc in-line four-cylinder unit develops a spirited 71bhp and is assisted by a sensible oil cooler addition following a complete block overhaul. The engine bay is beautifully restored with every nut and bolt replaced and a home tinkerer’s dream with the huge front end lifting to allow unrestricted access. The website engine images really do speak for themselves. Coupled with simple mechanics and incredible parts support network, these cars are simple and economical to keep on the road. The four-speed gearbox is a standard non-overdrive unit.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES - The original 4½ steel wheels are immaculate and wear contrasting black nave plates with new wheel nuts and chrome valves. Naturally, in keeping with a full restoration the Fulda EcoControl 155/ 80 R13 tyres are new. Front disc brakes with rear drums operate exactly as they should but, do require a little more stopping distance compared to modern standards
