Winner of the Mk1 standard concours category of the MX5 Owners National Rally in 2017 and recently recommissioned to make it even better! Would make a fantastic addition to any collection or discerning MX5 enthusiast. A great time to buy as the MX5 celebrates its 30th anniversary, with lots of opportunities to showcase this beautiful example, very collectible with prices rising for early special edition models.
The Harvard Special Edition doesn’t fail to showcase the wonderful Mk1 MX5, finished in classic Silver Stone (code 3L), trimmed in unique burgundy leather with contrasting grey piping, chrome brace bar, wood trim, Momo steering wheel, 15’ alloy wheels and Harvard badging and floor mats.
With super low miles supported by diligent and documented ownership, the finish is can easily be described as near museum quality. Absolutely rust free, outside, inside and underside with all original paintwork and panels. Near perfect with only a couple of tiny stone chips and a small mark on the driver’s door which is barely noticeable. It retains its original canvas roof along with remarkable crystal clear original rear window. All unique Harvard badges are present and in top condition.
Inside is factory fresh, retaining a classic 90s new smell. The luxurious leather is all original and unmarked, no scratches or sign of wear with the carpets retaining an as new look and feel. Enthusiasts will be stunned by the presence of the special edition brand new Harvard carpet mats, in original Mazda packaging – they have never been used or stood on! Only brought out for the photographs. The original Clarion CD player is in place and tonneau cover is in as new condition. The boot compartment is unmarked and the space saver wheel, jack and tools unused.
The 1.8 16v DOHC engine runs smoothly and quietly cosseted by a simply astounding engine bay, with all components retaining original stickers, complimented by the presence of original Japanese quality gold zinc fixtures and fittings – a show quality engine bay.
The car drives perfectly as you would expect given the mileage and provenance. Despite this the rear running gear has recently been sympathetically recommissioned from a cosmetic and servicing perspective. The rear subframe was removed and powder coated and refitted with brand new original Mazda parts, including new handbrake cables, brakes, brake dust shields, exhaust heat shield and rear wheel bearings replaced with the much improved fully sealed units. New original differential driveshaft seals have been replaced and refreshed with modern high quality fully synthetic gear oil.
A fully documented file has been retained, showing all work undertaken, including a major service in 2016 and new cambelt in August 2017.
All of the original 15 inch Speedline wheels are unmarked and fitted with matching as new Bridgestone tyres all round.
All MOTs are present, supported by a documented file with the current advisory free MOT running to June 2020. All three factory Mazda keys are present.
This wonderful car is fully supported by a traceable ownership history.
The car was original supplied new by Mazda Cars (UK) Limited directly to Mr Stephen Dawes on the 27th May 1997 on the Special Forces Programme, the car was subsequently supplied to Mr Dawes, who at the time was based in Belgium, 4 months later it returned with him to the UK where it was stored and used very infrequently given his military commitments. From there it was sold to his brother in 2016.
From there, the car was sold to another like-minded enthusiast in 2017 to accompany his collection of concours E-Type and Bentley.
I’m the 4th owner and purchased the car earlier this year with the intention to show the car and compete at concours level. Unfortunately, my plans have now changed and I reluctantly need to reduce my collection!
Viewing and any inspection is welcome – you will not be disappointed.
