The Jeep Wrangler TJ is the third generation of the hugely popular Jeep Wrangler off-road and sport utility vehicle. Introduced in 1996 as a 1997 model, the TJ reintroduced the circular headlights the classic Jeep models had been known for. Unveiled on January 2, 1996, at the 1996 Detroit Auto Show the TJ was an evolutionary update of the YJ model, itself derived from the CJ7, which followed the earlier CJ models which trace their heritage all the way back the 1940s military Jeeps. The TJ arrived in Jeep showrooms in April 1996, after 6 years of overall investment and 36 month production development phase. Instead of leaf springs as found on the YJ predecessor, this updated Wrangler featured a modern coil-spring suspension, front and rear, based on that of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, for better ride and handling, and a return to the classic CJ's round headlamps. The update proved massively popular and brought the Wrangler up to date as a far more modern and 'easy to live with' Jeep.
This is the 4.0 litre top of the range 'Sahara' edition, in eye-catching black paint finish with green and spice interior and removable black Quadratec soft top with tinted windows. These Wrangler were originally supplied as 'either/or' models with hard or soft tops, as they were never supplied with both tops when new. The 4.0 litre engine is the preferred choice, with manual transmission and switchable 2/4 wheel drive. The roof and can be removed easily, giving you that classic open-top Jeep look. This Jeep is in the original factory specification apart from electric windows (first time I have seen those on a TJ Wrangler) an upgraded CD player (cassette tapes for the original) tubular side steps, and a replacement hood.
On the Road:
I absolutely adore driving this Jeep, it’s so much fun! It's got immense charm and character, and it gives you a wonderful sense of 'Americana' every time you clamber up into the driver's seat. The Jeep starts first turn of the key, with the gutsy 4.0 litre straight six engine offering bags of grunt and torque. It surges eagerly under acceleration, starts, stops and does what it should. The ride quality is more refined than the earlier models and it's engaging to drive, happy at any speed and goes wherever and whenever you need it to. I have driven a number of these Jeeps, this one is very smooth and drives very well with no significant noises from the drivetrain. These cars can be used for everyday commuting if required, as reliable family and pet transport, as a working thoroughbred 4x4, full on mud-plugger, or just for pleasure as a weekend treat - by being capable of all uses this car is a brilliant all-rounder.
This car is fitted with the fuel injected 180 hp 4.0 litre (3960cc) AMC 242 straight six engine, one of four AMC engines kept in production when Chrysler bought AMC in 1987. Chrysler engineers continued to refine the engine and the last in the line of the AMC inline sixes, the 4.0 is regarded as one of the best Chrysler 4x4 off-road engines ever made. A Motor Trend long-term test noted "this long-lived OHV powerplant has a reputation for getting people where they need to go" as well as "much love expressed by owners for the torquey 4.0-liter/190-horsepower inline six." The engine is known for longevity, and can sometimes cover more than 300,000 miles without rebuilding. It also features a timing chain which should last the life of the engine, as opposed to a timing belt which needs changing at regular service intervals.
The car has the Aisin-Warner AX15 manual transmission introduced in the 1988 (mid-year) YJ Wrangler and XJ/MJ Cherokee/Comanche Jeeps, and found in 1988-1999 Jeep XJ, YJ, and TJ models. They are generally regarded as the best five-speed transmission ever installed into a Jeep. They are an excellent gearbox, and remain in production by Aisin-Warner. It changes gear as it should, the clutch is also as it should be.
This car has covered 145,906 miles - an average of just over 6,600 miles per year over its 22 year life.
Current MOT runs until 11th September 2019 with no advisories, and will come with 12 months MOT.
As you can probably see from the pictures, this Jeep is in very good condition for its age and appears to have been well looked after, and doesn't appear to have been used heavily off road. There is some receipts with the car; brake pipe replacement in September 2018 for £740, both front universal joints, half shaft bearing, rear axle LSD clutches, exhaust and O2 sensors for £1400, and a few more. As the pictures show, the paintwork is still in very good condition and still has a deep shine. It's in very good condition for its age, but upon very close inspection does come with a little 'patina' as these Jeeps all tend to do. The interior is in good condition - just a little wear here and there. It’s always difficult to express in words the condition of any car, and most people have differing opinions about condition, so the best way to get a true impression will be to view this lovely car in person. I’m confident that anybody with realistic expectations will be delighted to own and enjoy this awesome four wheel drive. The best way to work out if it is the right car for you, would be to come and have a look.
The general value range for these legendary TJ Wranglers in good, road worthy and presentable condition with MOT is normally £5000 - £9,000 with immaculate examples priced considerably higher. This Jeep is offered to sell swiftly at a very tempting £5750.
This is a hugely entertaining 'proper' 4x4, hugely powerful, coupled with superb traction and ultimate 'go anywhere' credentials, it’s sure to put a smile on your face with every mile. With the the soft top and doors removed (a 10 minute job) on a sunny day, it's hard to beat the thoroughly enjoyable experience. It’s a great conversation starter, and being so far removed from all of the humdrum everyday cars on our roads, people can’t stop staring at it. If I'm honest, I rather hope this takes a while to sell. If so, I might find the time be use it myself in the hopefully imminent repeat of last year with another long hot summer. If you are looking for something different & interesting to liven up your day to day motoring, I'm quite sure you'll love it!
