Some believe the 356 Speedster to be the last good bargain out of Stuttgart before Porsche figured out they could start charging customers more for less. In the US Porsche needed a stripped down car that would cost less and be more competitive among cheaper British imports like Triumphs and Jaguars. Thus the 356 Speedster was designed with minimal luxuries and maximum affordability. It was sold for just under $3,000…nowadays that won’t cover the insurance.
Now available on consignment we have a beautifully restored 1958 Porsche T2 356 Speedster finished in the incredible original color Aquamarine Blue with a red leather interior. The car was built November 15, 1957 and imported to New York by Max Hoffman. Per the COA the following optional equipment was added; sealed beam headlights, USA Bumpers and Speedometer in miles. Later on the previous owner added authentic Rudge 15 x 4.5 chrome wheels with spinner knobs with spare. The “spinner knobs” were specifically engineered with left and right threads marked “Auf” on each side, so they would tighten under acceleration. A good set of Rudge wheels can go for $40-50k.
The current owner, who specializes in Ferrari Dino restorations was looking at a Ferrari Dino when he happened upon this 58’ Speedster at Bob Campbell’s shop and ended up taking both home. Bob Campbell, now retired, had specialized in 356 restorations, sales and maintenance since he opened in 1964. The now owner bought the car 4 years ago and had it shipped down to his Ferrari restoration shop in Escondido, California. At the time of purchase the car was various shades of red but was dry (many before restoration pictures available). The current owners fastidiousness and great eye for detail gave him the unique ability to restore some spectacular Ferraris over the years and he was ready to tackle this Speedster. The car was taken apart and every original part that could be reconditioned and reused was saved. All panels (hood, deck lid, both doors all have correct vin-stamping 118). The car was media blasted in order to remove the old faded paint. Being a dry car not a lot of rust was present and metal work was kept to a minimum. Once the metal work was completed the car was professionally painted which looks beautiful, smooth and glossy. The Aquamarine blue really pops with the red leather interior (original color combination).
Most of the work was performed in the owners Ferrari restoration shop by a small team of specialists. Like a lot of Speedsters, the original engine was lost over the years. However, the non-matching numbers motor was sent out to Competition Engineering for machining and was then rebuilt in house using period correct hardware, proper finishes etc. Keeping with originality, the owner elected to keep the 6v system and the wiring harness was replaced with a new one.
The suspension and transmission were rebuilt by Jon Bunin at Werkstatt in Vista, CA. The gauges were sent to Hollywood Speedometer and the interior was restored by Autos International, who the owner conveniently shares a building. Autos International is the premier shop for anything Porsche interiors, using only the best period correct materials. The interior is high-quality red leather which has been beautifully tailored to a perfect fit and finish. As you can see, all subcontracted work was done by specialists and to the highest degree of quality. This was a complete nut and bolt, bare metal restoration. The owner reassembled the car at his shop in Escondido and has since put only 36 miles on the odometer. Lots of the original parts were rescued, restored and reused to keep with the originality of the car. The deck lid grill was professionally restored by a local specialist and NOS SWF tail lights were sourced. The car comes with COA, Kardex, spare Rudge wheel, jack and period correct tan trunk luggage.
