Apart from the obvious, the best thing about this is how straight and clean it is for a '76 car. There is no crash damage, and the only rust is what you can see in the photos - surface. There is no significant rust anywhere else! Floors, sills, chassis, doors, headlight bowls, even bottom of rear arches / wing behind rear wheels are totally solid ! One very small patch required on n/s/f wing bottom- thats it!
The car was built in Malta - and has the boot sticker to prove it. Can only presume it spent part of its life over there in the sun with no salt to promote the old tinwork.
So you know you won't have to wheel the mig out for that welding marathon that you would normally end up doing with that 'bargain project'!
As you can see it has a 1.8 mx5 engine and box fitted, along with turbo, inlet manifold, and downpipe. Included also are dump valve, fuel pressure regulator, custom made fuel rail with larger injectors, swirl pot, and high pressure fuel pump. Also a new radiator, icons hoses, intercooler and many other parts including mazda wiring loom from donor car. Most of these parts still have to be plumbed in so the car does not run just now. None of the work has been done by myself, and I don't know anything about turbos etc, but I will answer any questions as honestly as I can.
Engine mounts have been custom made, and there has been no cutting of chassis legs etc to fit them. There has been a hole cut in the tunnel for the gearstick. All the brightwork is present (hard to get now), including the cool chrome strip rear petrol flap thing! New number plates, (x4), pipework, clips, anodised wheel nuts etc - you get the picture. Approx 5k has been spent on this build so far!
The previous owner who was an engineer, also spent a lot of time installing the mx5 gauges to the Hillman dash which suits the dash well. - see photo. He could not however, give me any history of the engine, so it is up to yourself whether you keep this one or use another unit, but these are obviously cheap and plentiful.
Suspension has spax adjustable crypto gas shocks (rear), stronger lowered springs and reconditioned calipers (front). Also lowering blocks at rear. Its in the weeds. Also some new brake pipes fitted. Comes with the temp steel rims, and rolls freely.
As you can imagine a lot of money and time has been invested in this car, and I am only asking what I paid for it. There is still a lot of work to do - propshaft, wiring loom, paint and interior cheer up etc, but it is basically a really solid car requiring finishing.
I have owned this for about 2 years now and have finally realised I am never going to get round to doing anything with it (gutted!) The usual, lack of funds, and losing storage space. Please serious enquiries only, no tyre kickers or dreamers please. Sorry, no part exchange for another vehicle / drum kit, parrot or banjo.
The reg doc is in my name with no nasty surprises.
So why go down the ford cortina / MGB route when you can have something a bit more fun, left field (and potentially faster!?)
This charming period saloon is in remarkably sound original condition, having had a small fortune spent in recent years, including complete professional rebuild of engine transmission rear axle brakes.....
