1996 Alfa Romeo GTV 2.0 Twin Spark - Red - TS Twinspark For Sale
I bought this lovely Alfa earlier this year to use as I needed something to tide me over whilst my other modern classic was having some major works done to it. I’d always fancied one of these and it certainly didn’t disappoint! I’m not desperate to sell as I am still enjoying using it – I run a classic car business (50s, 60s and 70s stuff) so I have been using it once or twice a week on trade plates to keep everything moving nicely.
The car had been in the hands of a long-term previous owner (20 years!) who had used the car daily and had treated it to anything it needed throughout that time. He was a meticulous Alfa-enthusiast type. I have quite a lot of paperwork for the car, including letters from 1994 onwards from Alfa Romeo, after the original owner ordered the car pre-release, confirming that the cars would go into production and be available in the UK in 1996.
As you can see from the pictures, the car presents very well indeed, but of course it isn’t an immaculate show car at this price. There are no real areas needing rectification. The paintwork shines very well – these earlier Phase 1 cars originally had black sills and bumpers but on this example they have been painted – in my opinion, a very good move and they look great! The paint on the rear wings and doors is original – very unusual for one of these as they usually suffer dents and dings which have to be filled and repainted – none of that here.
The car has been fitted with uprated shock absorbers all round (Spax or Bilstein, I forget which), and it has been lowered very slightly. The ride is a bit firmer than standard but not too crashy. A stainless steel exhaust system has also been fitted, at great expense – it sounds great when given the beans, but again, is nice and docile when you want it to be. The cambelt and auxiliary belt has been fitted earlier this year, along with a full service. The car doesn’t drink loads of oil, like these have a reputation to do – so all good there too. It’s had very regular oil changes and has been very well looked after. There are no warning lights on on the dash, and the car starts well even when left for a couple of weeks. A new battery was also fitted earlier this year. The clutch bites in the right place, gears select nicely, etc. The air con pump has been disconnected as it was apparently a bit noisy – again, it’s never bothered me as the fans kick out plenty of fresh air and keep things cool nicely.
The interior is in fine fettle – the door cards, dash, carpets and seats are all in very good condition with no major wear. I much prefer the earlier seats and earlier gauge setup on the dash compared to the Phase 2 cars – it somehow feels much more ‘classic’ and you get that sense of occasion every time you sit in it. The headlining does need some TLC but it’s not hanging down – I was quoted £50 by a trimmer to get it sorted – an easy job, but it’s never bothered me at all. A Sony CD player is fitted, with Bluetooth etc.
The car has MOT until April 2020, and went through the last test with no advisories at all. It’s ready to jump in and use. 2 sets of keys are included – the central locking works fine on the key but the remote button doesn’t seem to work – possibly just a battery, it’s never bothered me as I’m used to classic cars!!
Like I’ve said, it’s not a show queen but it’s also not the usual tarted-up, botched together example, like most seem to be. I viewed 5 or 6 other cars before buying this one, and have covered 2 or 3000 trouble-free miles in my ownership this year. I have done several long journeys in it and wouldn’t hesitate jumping in it to drive to Glasgow tomorrow. It’s an ideal starter classic or usable daily car for any Alfa enthusiast.
Please note that this car is being sold privately, and is in no way related to my classic car business - this is my own personal car!
The car is also listed on eBay - see there for some more pictures.
