The 1976 Cadillac De Villes were the last of the proper full sized, rear drive Cadillac's ever made. Built properly and traditionally, before Cadillac lost its way.
This is a 1976 Coupe variant which I brought over to the UK in 2013. It had spent all it’s life in Indiana where it had just two very caring owners. I have some original paperwork for the car and a copy of the title. Bought from a dealer in Missouri, as I was so utterly blown away by its condition.
Since purchase I've done some re-commissioning work to keep it up to the exceptional standard in which it now sits.
New heater core
New wiper/washer motor
Replacement rear bumper filler panels
New rear springs and shock absorbers
Starting with the bodywork, its excellent. Paint gleams, and is in superb order throughout. Original hand painted pin striping is all present. Body is super straight. No signs of rust bubbles or any other defects. Being critical, there are a couple of tiny little stone chips here and there, but you have to look hard. Looks pretty much like new.
Chrome is perfect and shines brightly. No pitting or dull bits. All rubber inserts on bumpers are clean and tidy, a couple of very minor scuffs but no splits or cracks,
Stainless parts and other external trims are also excellent with a small ding on the strip on the o/s rear wing.
Rear plastic bumper filler panels were all cracked and perished from age so, as already stated, these have been replaced with a reproduction kit from the States which I had professionally painted.
All glass is excellent. Lights are all perfect, no cracked lenses.
Vinyl roof looks like new. No splits, cracks or rips etc.
Wheel trims are all like new. No kerb rash or dents.
Car does not leak anywhere, weather stripping and seals are all good. Trunk and interior are all nice and dry and there is a genuine Cadillac full size trunk mat.
All mechanical aspects of the car are in excellent order and it runs beautifully. It has always had routine servicing at yearly intervals ie oil and filter changes and chassis lube. THE CAR HAS BEEN MAINTAINED TO A HIGH STANDARD...It starts on the button and runs very well. Vacuum hoses are correctly hooked up, and nothing has been bodged. Doesn't leak oil or coolant, runs like a watch and doesn't overheat.
The 500 engine makes huge torque and runs very strong. More than enough, it probably runs as good as it did when new.
The transmission shifts perfectly. No clunks or slipping.
STEERING& Suspension is all in good order. Glides along with no wandering or clunking. Handles surprisingly well for such a massive beast. No sports car, but also not a massive blancmange. Has a superb, smooth ride, better than most modern cars. The original auto-levelling suspension was not working so was replaced with conventional shocks and springs a couple of years ago.
Sits on four American Classic 1¼ inch white-band tyres of the correct size which were fitted in 2015 and have only done a couple of thousand miles since so all have tons of tread.
Brakes are excellent and pull the car up quickly with minimum fuss. Feel nice and progressive and strong. Big power discs on the front.
Designed for unleaded fuel and doesn't require additives.
Inside the car is a lovely place to be. Like the rest of the car, it is in fabulous condition. It has the real soft white leather seats which I think are nicer than the equivalent vinyl. It is the most comfortable car I've ever sat in, and everyone who's been out in it would agree! Everything is original and in place, with no damage. No cracked dash or split seats. No sagging headliner etc. Car is silent inside, no rattle on trim or squeaks from anywhere. Doors fit well, and seal out all the noise from outside. Electric windows operate nice and quick. Fit and finish is far superior to anything I've been used to on classic American cars.
I'll reel off a list of some of the equipment/options. And remember, this is a 1976 car.....
Luxury ‘landau’ type padded half vinyl roof with coach lamps
Fully automatic climate control,
Guidematic headlight control (auto dipping headlights).
Twilight sentinal (lights can be set to illuminate and switch off automatically and stay on for programmable period of time after ignition off)
8 way power driver’s seat
Automatic electric aerial.
Three speed wipers, with variable intermittent.
Fiber optic lamp monitoring system.
Remote boot release with electric auto soft shut function.
Detachable litter bin.
Remote driver and passenger mirrors – convex glass on passenger side.
Tilt and telescopic adjustable steering wheel.
Individual 12v lighters for each passenger.
Everything inside the car works with the exception of the windscreen defroster/demister which you won’t need for summer use. It blows but not on the screen. The original "digital" clock. (It was actually mechanical and supposed to be reliable) has been replaced with a modern 24 hour electric digital clock with inside temperature display. I also had the radio refurbished with some modern parts and with new rear speakers it sounds as good as any modern radio.
History and paperwork...There is some paperwork and interesting history with the car, the most important being a affidavit from the first owner outlining how well he cared for the car, having never driven it in ice or snow. The original booklet, and owners handbook are present, all in good condition in the original wallet and the US title and all the appropriate DVLA stuff to go with it.
All the old MOT's since import are here. There is also all the DVLA paperwork to re register the car as an historic vehicle, which has been sorted out now. Free road tax and as from May 2018 the car is MOT FREE...!!!
Then there are the invoices for the things that I've bought for it.
As mentioned, this must be one of the best Coupe De Villes in the country, possibly Europe too. It is simply marvellous and turns head wherever it goes with it’s massive presence on the road.
Performance is excellent. It will leap off the line and get up to speed in pretty short order. At the same time its low geared, so it'll happily sit at 70 on the motorway without feeling like its working too hard or needing an extra gear. Brakes are excellent too, so you don't have to worry and have your foot hovering over the pedal needing a runway to stop. Although it is a BIG car, it’s not difficult to drive, and with a bit of care, fits our roads with no problem. It’s a very easy classic to live with. I'd happily drive it anywhere, and I've put approx 7500 faultless miles on it over the last 6 years. Fuel? - expect 12-15 average (combined city and urban) mpg, but light-foot it on the motorway and you might touch 20 mpg - 18mpg is easily achievable on a steady run.
I'm of the opinion that any maintenance work deserves to be done properly on such a clean original car. This car is the very definition of a cream puff survivor, keep it nice, and it will be a superb investment. Not the cheapest but possibly the best available. I think you would certainly have to look long and hard to find a better, low mileage, example. Oh, and she is a trophy winner at various shows.
This is the very last of the traditional, full sized American cruisers. With the big industry wide downsizing in 76/77, nothing like this would ever be seen again.
Thank you for looking at this listing. I've tried to be honest and give an accurate description. All I ask is PLEASE...serious buyers/collectors only, no time wasters, dreamers, tire kickers or test pilots. This baby deserves to go to a good home and a caring owner. Car will only be released upon receipt of cleared funds. Can accept a securing deposit of £500, balance within 7 days.
