2001 Mercedes-Benz W208 CLK 230 Kompressor For Sale
For sale is my very good condition 2001(Y) Mercedes-Benz W208/C208 CLK 230 Kompressor. This is a facelift car with Avantgarde trim level meaning it has lower suspension, dark maple wood trim, deeper bumpers and blue tinted glass. The 744 Brilliant Silver paintwork is beautifully partnered with full grey leather upholstery.
As many enthusiasts know, this is the 1st generation CLK (W208) and a successor to the earlier C124 cars, launched in 1997 and ran through to 2003 before being succeeded by the W209 CLK series. These early CLKs are becoming increasingly rare on the roads, particularly ones in as good as condition as this one.
I purchased this example in 2016 from its original owner and it was clear that it was their pride and joy. I bought the car with 60,000 miles on the clock and full Mercedes-Benz service history up to 58,000 miles. Regardless of the mileage done, the previous owner would have the car put through a full service, some years with bills topping £500-600 with only 1,500 miles done since the previous one! The service book is stamped up to 58,000 miles and from there, I have kept the car extremely well serviced with a mix of my own servicing and other jobs completed by local Mercedes-Benz Specialist, Klasse Series Automotive. All of the work in my ownership has receipts to prove, with a large folder full of details covering everything from tyre purchases to wiper blades. The mileage is currently at 97,757 miles, so still very low for its age.
Since owning the car, I have done a large amount of work to keep it in good condition. Both front track rod ends have been changed as well as the lower ball joints. The rear trunnion/control arm bushes have been changed and all 4 brake discs and pads have been changed. The original 16” alloy wheels have been changed for 17” ‘Sador’ wheels, taken from a Mercedes-Benz W210. These were not originally fitted to the CLK models but I feel that they compliment the car well. These are wrapped in 235/45/17 Bridgestone Potenza tyres and in the boot is the original unused Michelin Pilot 205/55/16 tyre.
When I first purchased the car, I took it to my local Mercedes-Benz specialist for an underbody inspection and showed absolutely zero rust, even the front cross member was spotless with an original Mercedes-Benz sticker present! To preserve this condition, the garage used Kent Rubberguard spray to cover the floor pan and suspension components as well as spraying the brake/fuel lines with protective wax and filling the sills and cavities with waxoyl.
Unfortunately the car did have some surface rust present on the front and wheel arches as well as stone chip related corrosion on the leading edge of the bonnet. I therefore decided in Summer of 2017 to have this seen to, so it went back into Klasse Series Automotive for repairs. This included the rear arches being repaired and resprayed, the O/S front wing changed for a genuine part and the bonnet repaired and fully resprayed. Straight after the beautiful paint job was complete, the CLK was taken on a flawlessly reliable 1600 mile trip to Germany and back before going on to win Best in Class at a local Mercedes-Benz show.
Other work completed includes a new alternator unit and aux belt, the gearbox selector unit replaced, the lateral acceleration sensor replaced, both rear anti roll bar linkages changed and the gearbox oil and filter changed with genuine components.
I have changed the oil and oil filter every 5000-6000 miles and although the work has been carried out myself, I have created a spreadsheet covering every bit of work carried out along with the dates and mileages of the service intervals.
The interior is a beautiful and very comfortable place to be with only a small amount of wear on the driver’s seat. The rear seats have barely been sat in. The cruise control, electric seats, headrest drop, electric windows, original Mercedes-Benz stereo, electric boot release and steering wheel controls all work fine, even the original first aid kit is unopened. The original and full tool kit roll is also present.
The car drives extremely well for its age and always gets good compliments from passengers. The M111.975 2.3 litre Superchaged engine is super smooth and pulls very strong as well as returning good MPG, with a 30mpg average commuting. I drive my cars gently and have seen 40MPG on long trips. The only fault I have every had with the engine is the alternator failing, everything else has been flawless. These are strong, high performance engines with variable valve timing, sodium cooled exhaust valves, duplex timing chain and Eaton M45 Supercharger, producing 203bhp from factory. The engine is linked to the well proven 722.6 5-speed Tiptronic automatic gearbox, with changes effortlessly even when cold.
As this was used daily up until very recently, there are a few small niggly things with the car which I would like to list. As mentioned above, there is a small amount of wear to the driver’s seat but no serious tears. The pixels have failed on the outside temperature gauge and there is a small, very superficial rust bubble appearing around the boot lock. Please remember that this car is 18 years old and even though it has these small details to address, it is in absolutely fantastic condition for its age.
The wheel arches are still immaculate after their repairs and the rest of the bodywork polishes up very nicely. Even the boot floor is spotless on the car, so this is not your average rough bodied CLK, even though it comes from the Daimler Chrysler period. It’s condition has been kept to this condition with regular servicing by being washed, dried and waxed every week. I am a member of the national Mercedes-Benz Club and an absolute Mercedes-Benz fanatic.
The car will come complete with all of the receipts and garage bills, all of the original manuals including the original bill of sale and factory inspection sheet and 2 sets of functioning keys, original Dodmanread Mercedes-Benz window sticker, number plate and keyring and an MOT until the end of February 2020. If you look at the previous MOTs it’s a clear evidence of the car’s condition, with most years of passing without a single advisory and only failing once since 2005 on a discoloured indicator bulb.
