The 190E 2.6 is gathering a bit of a cult status – if you could afford a Mercedes-Benz in 1991, you were clearly doing extremely well for yourself but to have a 2.6 with all the Sportline trimmings, you were the kid. In Astral Silver with Grey Sports Check bucket seats, this particular 2.6 was special enough that it was first delivered to Mercedes-Benz UK and was supposedly used on their stand at the Earls Court Motor Show in 1991.

Sportline optional equipment on the W201 was not commonly optioned, and this car has the full package, comprising of 22mm lowered suspension, different shocks and anti-roll bars, tighter steering ratio, 7J forged 15-hole alloy wheels, 390mm sports steering wheel, Sportline gearknob, Sportline wing badges and the cloth trimmed bucket seats. As well as this, the car has ASD Limited Slip Differential – so was clearly intended for the keen driver.

Driving a good 190E 2.6, even 32 years after the model was launched, explains perfectly what a compact saloon car should be like. Crisp responses, light-weight, planted handling thanks to 5 link independent suspension and superb performance from the silky smooth M103 engine. It’s easy to see why for many, this is Bruno Sacco’s finest design and every time I drive one I’m reminded that nothing compares.

While this example has covered a higher than average mileage (189k) for the extremely sensitive ‘collector market’ to consider valuable, it is in its own right a very special car and in true Mercedes-Benz fashion wears it’s odometer reading with pride. The car is known to the W201 world as it was previously owned by two members of the club that I know, and it was from the latter of those that it was sold to its last owner, who bought it in 2011.

In terms of service history, there is a thick folder of invoices and paperwork, as well as the stamped book and printout which shows 36 service stamps up to September 2013 and since then there are separate invoices for work carried out. It has been serviced annually since that date and in the last 2 years, following the passing of the previous owner, it was kept by his wife and looked after by their son. He organised for new brakes, new distributor cap and rotor arm and a fuel pressure accumulator to be fitted during this time. The fact that this car has never fallen out of maintenance and in to any form of dis-repair is really the reason why it still drives so well today. Make something out of high quality materials, keep it nice and it’ll last forever!

The bodywork of the car is in good overall condition, there are a few minor marks commensurate with age and mileage, but the paintwork is all good and there is no rust. Alloy wheels are in good condition shod with good tyres. Inside, the seats have held up remarkably well, with almost no wear at all and no marking or discolouration. The wood trim is in good order and the leather steering wheel and gearknob aren’t especially worn. It is fitted with an MB Audio 10 Cassette which works well and matches the interior illuminations and has a Hirschmann power aerial. All four electric windows and the sunroof work well.

Overall, this is a very tidy and very rare example of arguably Mercedes’ best saloon car. No doubt in years to come, the opportunity to acquire a car with such spec and history will be extremely hard fought and I know whoever buys this car will have an extremely usable, satisfying modern classic which will draw attention for all the right reasons. It has MOT until August 2020, please call any time to arrange viewing and P/X is considered.

Thanks for reading,

Jack
