The M1. The first BMW to wear the iconic M badge. The first and only supercar to be made by BMW. A compelling, exotic, mysterious machine, driven competitively by the likes of Hunt, Lauda, Piquet, Fittipaldi, Andretti – to name but a few – in its own race series. One of the rarest and rarely seen 70s/80s classic supercars, and without doubt one of the most desirable and sought-after machines in the world. At Munich Legends, we’re privileged to have worked on or restored many of these unique cars, for BMW UK themselves (255 BMW) as well as some of the world’s keenest car collectors. We have had the pleasure of sourcing, and finding buyers for some of the very best examples, such as Johnny Cecotto’s own private M1 and the 1979 championship winning M1 Procar driven by Niki Lauda.
Only 453 (or 457 depending on your source) M1s were built, including the various Procars (works cars and subsequent privateers), making it an incredibly rare classic.
Now we’ve found something really special. An original, matching numbers, 20,500kms example, manufactured in October 1979 and delivered new to BMW Park Lane in London on the 20th of November 1979 on behalf of Mr Tim Powell as a private import. Of course, BMW UK were not officially allowed to import these cars, but this is the closest one can get to a ‘UK car’. The car was registered and taxed on the 3rd of January 1980 to Mr Tim Powell, registration number M1 111. Tim Powell was a famous off shore powerboat racer and organised the Cowes-Torquay offshore powerboat race. Additionally, he was involved with the manufacture of Unipower GT cars in the 1960s.
Tim kept the car for only one year, at which point it was acquired by the current owner’s family. Our customer’s family happened to own a BMW dealership, where the car was then proudly displayed as a showpiece, and was kept and cared for as part of the family’s extensive car collection.
In 2007, the family made the decision to inspect the M1 thoroughly for any signs of aging or degeneration. A comprehensive programme of works was decided upon and undertaken over a two-year period. Now, we’ve often remarked about how everyone fantasises about doing this type of work – methodically and with an intricate eye for detail – including keeping every part or component removed from the car or replaced, to maintain absolute traceability and in keeping with a watertight provenance. This customer has done exactly that – and picked the programme of works as only people who know these cars would do. Take a look at the end of our write up!
Once completed, the car returned to the family collection, where it has been ever since.
We came to know the car from the family, who have asked us to find the right buyer for this truly remarkable M1. Firstly, we were asked to inspect and report on the vehicle, and, if happy with the condition and history, to accept the commission. We are genuinely delighted to handle the sale of this prestigious piece of BMW history, and to find a buyer that will appreciate just how exceptional this car is. Our report shows an original, matching numbers, genuine, rare car that would grace any collection.

All fuel lines and hoses were replaced with genuine BMW parts, including genuine BMW jubilee clips.
Genuine Bosch fuel Pump was fitted.
Fuel filters changed. (both main filter and tank filters)
Both fuel tanks were removed and were professionally cleaned and coated using the RENU protective coating process. (details in folder of this process)
All associated tank hoses were replaced using genuine BMW hoses and jubilee clips.
The cars original fuel hoses are included with the car.
Front brake callipers were rebuilt using genuine BMW parts.
Brake fluid was changed.
Genuine BMW brake flexi pipes were fitted.
EBC ceramic brake pads were fitted.
The cars first brake flexi pipes and front seal kit are included with the car.
Dry Sump Oil System
The M1s original dry sump oil tank is made of steel and therefore rusts.
It was decided that a genuine BMW replacement dry sump oil tank made of stainless steel would be a permanent solution to this issue, so a genuine BMW dry sump tank was fitted.
All the dry sump hoses and jubilee clips were replaced with genuine BMW parts.
All coolant hoses and jubilee clips were replaced using genuine BMW parts.
Genuine BMW thermostat was fitted.
Genuine BMW coolant bottle cap was fitted.
The coolant system was refilled with BMW coolant.
The cars original coolant hoses are included with car.
The cars original coolant cap and thermostat are also included with the car.
A genuine BMW distributor cap was fitted.
A genuine BMW rotor was fitted.
6 genuine BMW sparks plus were installed.
White ignition system vacuum hose replaced.
Included with the car:
Cars first spark plugs.
The cars first distributor cap and rotor.
The cars first white vacuum hose.
A new handmade rear silencer was sourced from London Stainless Steel.
Genuine BMW gaskets and rubbers were used installing the exhaust.
The main box of the rear silencer received a special Zirotec coating in black to replicate original silencer. (Details of exhaust and coating in folder)
The cars original exhaust is included with the car.
The oil was drained and refilled with original BMW oil.
Fuse holders were cleaned, and new fuses installed.
All relays were changed also.
The cars first relays are included with the car.
Engine Breather Pipes
All engine breather pipes were replaced. (some of these were not available from BMW and were sourced from alternative quality suppliers)
Wheels / Tyres
When supplied new all BMW M1s had CAMPAGNOLO stickers on each rim. These are missing off most cars.
When the original tyres were removed CAMPAGNOLO decals were fitted to the rims and lacquered over so they would remain on the rims.
New Pirelli tyres were fitted and original BMW M1 metal valve stems to the rims.
The cars first Pirelli P7 tyres are included with the car.
Invoice for new tyres included.
Engine cover hydraulic rams replaced with genuine BMW rams. (original rams included)
Air filter replaced with genuine BMW air filter. (original air filter included)
New Bosch Battery fitted to car.
Three oil and filter changes have been carried out on the following dates:
