This lovely little Elan Type 26 was ordered by its first owner in August of 1964 and registered in January of 1965. Within the supplied documentation is is a file containing an original order form, invoices from Lotus Components for an Elan in kit form, plus invoices from a Lotus subsidiary - Racing Engines Ltd for the engine, the close ratio gearbox, a heater and four Dunlop tyres! Further to this wonderful early history is the “Elan Test Certificate” with the car being inspected at 538 miles, following it’s first service at 522 miles, all invoices and correspondence with Lotus having all been kept in postmarked envelopes! Original sales brochure, handbooks, service booklet, and a first rate, first edition workshop manual are also supplied. Piles of invoices exist for spare parts and operations from names such as Mike Spence, Len Street and Ian Walker Racing to name a few. Of particular interest is an Ian Walker Stage 3 cylinder head, supported by correspondence from IWR and an invoice. The same owner kept the car until 1979, when he embarked on a restoration, however the vehicle was never completed and was laid up. A note of mileage logs and operations remains in one of the box files supplied.
The car was bought by its second owner, a Lotus collector in 2006, and the restoration began in 2008 with sourcing many of the rare and obscure parts required; Morland Jones of London were commissioned to do much of the works; using the Spyder Lotus pattern chassis as a basis, the rolling chassis was completed in March 2013, with Morland Jones having completely rebuilt and replaced all of the running gear, including the engine, differential unit and gearbox. Meanwhile the body was sent to marque experts Option 1 for their full seven stage process. The result is still stunning some six years on, with a super surface quality and some really excellent shut lines. All instruments were rebuilt and a period Radiomobile 900 series unit restored with hidden FM being added. New and correct vinyl floor mats were obtained from JAE in the US, the correct wheel was restored, and the seats and door furniture, and small brightworks were all trimmed using components and materials sourced from the Type 26 Register. The car was finally completed in April 2016, with a mileage reading 67046 miles with bills (once again supplied in another box file) in excess of £43,000.
The current owner has another Lotus project underway, and has asked me to sell the car on his behalf. Recently featured on front cover, and within the editorial of OCTANE magazine, September 2019.
The car has covered 7000 miles since completion and has been and serviced and maintained by GST Lotus Services in 2017, 2018 and 2019. It drives and performs beautifully, and requires absolutely nothing at all.
