This is an original UK SM EFI that was the Citroen press car featured on the front cover of Motor magazine December 1973.
I bought this car from the previous owner in 2010. He had owned it since 1984 and while it was in good mechanical order it was very scruffy.
I drove it around as it was for a while but following a mini cab driver reversing into the back of it in my car park I had the car completely striped and rebuilt.
It spent 18 months in J R Thompson in Battersea being taken back to bare metal and restored. Any rot was cut out and new old stock front wings were fitted courtesy of Stuart Ager from Brodie Engineering who was a huge help in the restoration.
The body was finished with a high quality paint job (As expected from one of the top London body shops) in original AC616 Oriental Blue. Andrew Brodie himself (may he rest in Gallic peace) spent several days with us helping refit the car correctly while regaling us with wild stories.
Unfortunately the grey cloth interior hadn’t faired well over the years and the foams were turning to dust. I had it re-trimmed in tan Connolly hide and renewing the foam at the same time to the correct pattern for a leather SM interior. The door cards were done at the same time to the same pattern as the originals.
New high quality wool carpets in dark Navy blue were fitted with matching over rugs. The headlining was in excellent original condition so wasn’t touched.
Mechanically the car was sound. Brodie Engineering had done a solid valve conversion for the previous owner back in the 90’s and save for a few small niggles the car drove well. However the wiring loom had deteriorated badly so instead of trying to patch it up I decided to fit a brand new one sourced from Oldtimer Electrique in Germany.
This was fitted by Pete Brewerton - ex head of harness design at Lotus.
Final touches include a set of 5 RGP wheels from Patrick Regembeau in France shod with a new set of classic Blockley tyres and a Gradulux rear blind (currently not fitted). The original wheels and trims are available in the sale.
This is a rare and important UK car in fantastic condition. It is currently stored at Car Vault London where it can be inspected.
