1970 Austin 1800 Needs TLC but in everyday use. For Sale

1970 Austin 1800. Black with black interior. Runs and drives well and is currently in everyday use.

This car is a bit of a curate’s egg. I’ll start with the good stuff…

It has spent the last five years in France (and has unfortunately been re-registered on a new number; the original was CPB715H). During this time it has been fitted with a new (ex-MOD, low compression) engine and gearbox (later rod-change type). These are genuinely excellent, leak free and perform extremely well. I was slightly worried about the low compression aspect but needn’t have been; it happily keeps up with modern traffic and actually drives extremely well.

It has five matching tyres (three excellent, two legal) and what looks to be a recent exhaust. The interior is very tidy other than some splits to the top of the rear seat, and it has seatbelts in the rear.

Brakes are excellent (including handbrake), and all electrics work (although wipers don’t self-park). Witter towbar fitted with working electrics. Note that the spotlights have been removed; they had never been connected and wobbled around when driving.

Although MOT exempt I submitted it for a MOT earlier this year; the tester was actually complimentary about most of the car’s structure. Almost all of the underside is very sound, however the leading 12” or so of the outer edges of the front floors need welding, as does a patch on the offside front inner wing. All should be straightforward to repair should you want to get a MOT. The only other failure was play in a ball-joint.

The upper bodywork looks ok from 10 paces. In reality, there is filler in most of the lower extremities of doors and front wings. The driver’s door is the worst, but I have a very good spare to go with the car (see photo). Although originally Antelope beige it has had a thick coat of black paint poorly applied at some point, so even the sound areas such as the bonnet have cracked/ crazing paint. As usual the photos flatter it.

Comes with handbook and Autobooks workshop manual.

Come and see what you think; the kettle’s always on. Expect the worst and you won’t be disappointed!

Located 5 miles SE of Wisbech on the Norfolk/ Cambridgeshire border.
